YOUR ROLE IN OUR FUTURE
Youth Engagement Officer
Ongoing, Part Time role – 64 Hours / Fortnight 
 
Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people living with cancer? Do you have an interest in youth engagement, support, and empowerment? We are looking for a dedicated Youth Worker to join our team in the Adolescent & Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Service, helping to improve the lives and experiences of young people with cancer. You will be a vital part of our multidisciplinary team, working directly with adolescents and young adults aged 15-25 years. Your role will focus on leading our youth participation program, establishing peer support program and activities and provide emotional and practical support to young patients and their families.
 
About You:
•    Tertiary qualifications in Education, Social Work, Psychology, Health Promotion or a related discipline
•    Capacity to engage and take initiatives in matters
•    Previous experience in coordination and implementation of new projects or events
•    Excellent written, and verbal communication skills
•    Ability to work outside of standard hours

Remuneration as per ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS (VICTORIAN PUBLIC SECTOR) (SINGLE INTEREST EMPLOYERS) ENTERPRISE AGREEMENT 2021-2026. Salary range of $77K - 85K (full time equivalent) dependent on candidate experience. To be discussed with Hiring Manager.

Position Summary

The Victorian Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Service is committed to working in partnership and consultation with young people. The Youth Engagement Officer position is a 0.2EFT, 12 month fixed term position focused on leading the development of the Youth Advocates Program as part of our broader Youth Participation Program.

Skills

Essential Requirements  
  • Tertiary qualification(s) in Education, Social Work, Psychology, Health Promotion or a related discipline.  
  • Keen interest in the principles of youth engagement and participation and how this translates at an organisational level  
  • Passion about working in partnership with young people to assist in raising voices, expanding choices and creating change across the cancer sector 
  • Capacity to engage and take initiative in matters relating to the engagement of young people in service development, implementation and evaluation 
  • Previous experience in coordination and implementation of a new project or event in line with organisational objectives. 
  • Excellent written, interpersonal, communication and presentation skills; 
  • High level of planning and organisational skills 
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and as part of a team 
  • Ability to work outside of standard hours  
Desirable Requirements  
  • Experience working with young people within the context of youth participation 
  • Experience in program planning, implementing and evaluation  
  • Experience in methods of consultation and engagement with young people and the wider organization/community

1. Support the implementation of a culture of youth engagement and participation at Peter Mac

Demonstrate a thorough understanding and commitment to Youth Participation and the engagement of young people in policy, service and program development
Advocate with and on behalf of young people to support their active participation and engagement relating to issues that directly affect them
Build and maintain effective relationships with relevant key stakeholders to support young peopleandrsquos engagement across the Victorian cancer sector
Work with the YPC to implement a promotional/communication strategy to raise the profile of youth participation across the Victorian cancer sector
Safely work within andlsquoyouth friendlyandrsquo times and practices to ensure greatest participation by young people, including after-hours and weekend work.

2. Lead the establishment of the Youth Advocates Program

Coordinate the implementation of the Youth Advocate Program as part of the broader Youth Participation Program at ONTrac at Peter Mac
Recruit, manage and support young people involved in the Youth Advocates program
Establish structures and processes to ensure young people engaged and supported in their roles as Youth Advocates
Coordinate projects and events that contribute to enhancing awareness of the benefits and opportunities for engaging young people

3. Ensure meaningful engagement of young people in their role as advocate through tailored education and support

Establish mechanisms for education and training to promote young peoplesandrsquo learning and skill development
Establish mechanisms to ensure young people are appropriately mentored and supported in their roles
Establish mechanisms to ensure young people receive appropriate training to promote skill development and support learning
Ensure a variety of engagement opportunities to support young peoplesandrsquo interest and align with their availability

4. Coordinate and facilitate the engagement of young people in youth participation opportunities

Plan and coordinate peer to peer interactions with clear accountability for program delivery
Establish mechanisms to strengthen engagement between Youth Cancer Advocates and the Victorian andamp Tasmanian Youth Cancer Action Board (YCAB)
