YOUR ROLE IN OUR FUTURE
 

Full Time Fixed Term Role

  • Fixed term for 12 months

  • 80 hours per fortnight with monthly ADO

  • Salary range between $100,084.4 -$125,346 based on years of experience.

 

This position is for a scientist with significant experience in analysing high-throughput genomic data to contribute to both the research, diagnostic and translational diagnostic outputs of the Wilson Centre for Blood Cancer Genomics. Reporting to Associate Professor Piers Blombery.


Key duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
• Analysis of genomic data from targeted panel sequencing to whole genome transcriptome sequencing in both research and accredited settings
• Contribution to supervision and training of other analysts and students 
• Contribution to the research outputs of the Wilson Centre including manuscript preparation and grant writing 
• Ethically conducting all duties
• Maintain knowledge of medical/scientific literature relevant to the laboratory’s testing program
• Awareness & adherence to Occupational Health and Safety policies


Victorian Department of Health has endorsed the initiative to restructure existing public pathology by bringing together laboratories into pathology networks operating under a lead health service. 
Pathology services from the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Royal Women’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital will transition to a single pathology service.  This creates an exciting opportunity to strengthen the scope, scale and reach of pathology services across the Parkville precinct to benefit all Victorians.

Essential requirements • PhD or equivalent with specific training and / or experience in molecular techniques
• Demonstrated experience in high-throughput diagnostic molecular techniques
• Demonstrated experience and competency in the performance and understanding of a wide range of molecular techniques including but not limited to ddPCR, QPCR, NGS workflows 
• Experience with designing, optimising and validation of new assays
• Interpersonal attributes necessary to organise staff, develop staff skills across laboratory disciplines and work as part of an effective and clinically interactive team
• Professional approach to patient care, service confidentiality and provision of pathology/testing services
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Demonstrated ability to meet the clinical expectations of client
• Demonstrated ability to work and communicate cooperatively in a team including other scientists, senior scientists, pathologists, genetic counsellors, clinical staff and researchers
• Demonstrated ability to critically assess and evaluate new equipment, instruments or products relevant to the diagnostic work of their laboratory 
• Demonstrated ability to present work, write protocols and maintain documentation
Desireable requirements • Postgraduate qualification (MSc, PhD)
• Relevant Professional Society Membership and Fellowship (eg. HGSA, FFSc (RCPA)) 
• Experience in diagnostic pathology with specific experience in molecular pathology
• Experience with one or more of: automated sequencing (Sanger & NGS), high resolution melting, genotyping, real-time PCR, digital PCR and bio-informatics
