AYA Senior Dietitian
Ongoing, Part Time Role – 60 Hours per Fortnight 

 

The Victorian Adolescent & Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Service is a dynamic, multidisciplinary team of clinicians, educators, and researchers working collaboratively to support young people aged 15–25 who have been diagnosed with cancer.

 

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Dietitian to join our team. This role will deliver high-quality, developmentally appropriate nutrition care to adolescents and young adults with cancer across both inpatient and outpatient settings.

 

This ongoing, part-time position plays a key role in service development and provides statewide secondary consultation. The successful applicant will work closely with internal and external partners to strengthen nutrition care across the AYA cancer continuum. The AYA Senior Dietitian will also actively contribute to quality improvement initiatives, education, and research activities.

 

Remuneration as per Medical Scientists, Pharmacists and Psychologists Victorian Public Sector (Single Interest Employers) Enterprise Agreement 2021-2025. Dietitian Grade 3: Year 1 (AK1) $106,386.80 (full-time equivalent - to be prorated for Part Time) - Dietitian Grade 3: Year 4 (AK4) $123,905.60 (full-time equivalent - to be prorated for Part Time) dependent on candidate experience. Position Summary

The Adolescent & Young Adult (AYA) Dietitian is a key member of the multidisciplinary Victorian AYA Cancer Service, responsible for delivering high-quality, developmentally appropriate nutrition care to young people with cancer across inpatient and outpatient settings. The role plays a critical part in service development, statewide secondary consultation, and collaboration with internal and external partners to strengthen nutrition care across the AYA cancer continuum. In addition, the AYA Dietitian contributes to the service’s broader objectives through active involvement in quality improvement, education, and research initiatives.

Skills

Essential Requirements •Eligibility for full membership of Dietitians Australia and eligibility for the Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) Program.
•Minimum of 7 years’ experience in clinical dietetics, including experience in adolescent health, oncology, or a relevant healthcare setting.
•Proven ability to build effective relationships in a multidisciplinary setting 
•Proven ability to negotiate for effective patient outcomes with staff at all levels 
•Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including experience providing education or consultation to staff, patients, and families.
•Proven commitment to own professional development 
•Experience and interest in initiating quality improvement activities and service development 
•Employees are required to undertake a National Criminal Record Check and a Working with Children Check prior to commencing employment
•Employees are required to maintain a valid Working with Children Check throughout their employment
•Employees are required to maintain compliance with Peter Macs Staff Immunisation - Prevention of Vaccine Preventable Diseases” procedure
Desirable Requirements •Possession or progression towards postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field (e.g., oncology, adolescent health, nutrition, research)
•Experience in student supervision, teaching, and/or mentoring within a clinical setting.
•Experience in service development, including the design, implementation, or evaluation of new or innovative models of care.
•Knowledge of health service systems, electronic medical records (e.g., EPIC), and clinical governance frameworks.
•Interest and experience in designing or contributing to research and audit

 

Certifications, Licenses & Registrations

Membership of Dietitians Australia (DA) and current Provisional or Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) status

Provision of Care   •Provide evidence-based, developmentally appropriate nutrition care tailored to the clinical, developmental, and psychosocial needs of young people with cancer and their families.
•Deliver clinical services across inpatient and outpatient settings, ensuring high standards of practice and integration within the broader model of AYA care.
•Collaborate with the interdisciplinary AYA team, Nutrition and Speech Pathology Department, and other clinical services to optimise nutrition support and outcomes.
•Provide specialist advice and guidance to clinical staff regarding complex or treatment-related nutritional issues.
•Maintain and develop specialist knowledge in oncology nutrition and adolescent and young adult health.
Leadership & Professional Development  •Provide secondary consultation, mentorship, and expert guidance to dietitians, allied health, and clinical teams.
•Lead and contribute to service development, innovation, and quality improvement initiatives that enhance nutritional outcomes and patient experience.
•Support and deliver education, training, and capacity-building programs for hospital and community stakeholders.
•Represent the AYA nutrition service in governance, statewide networks, and external forums, advocating for the needs of young people and the role of nutrition in multidisciplinary care.
•Maintain a high standard of professional knowledge through ongoing education, clinical supervision, reflective practice, and participation in relevant seminars, conferences, and professional groups.
•Adhere to professional and organisational codes, including Dietitians Australia Code of Professional Conduct, Code of Ethics, and the organisation’s Code of Conduct.
•Foster a culture of teamwork and collaboration between the AYA team and the Nutrition and Speech Pathology Department.
Collaborative Practice  •Foster effective interdisciplinary communication and coordinated, patient-centered care.
•Collaborate with hospital departments, external partners, and statewide networks to optimise outcomes and streamline care transitions.
•Champion integrated models of care that maintain continuity across treatment, survivorship, and rehabilitation.
•Ensure young people’s perspectives and preferences are central to care planning and decision-making.
Research and Projects •Develop, promote and contribute to research, evaluation and evidence/best practice activities to improve  health/nutritional outcomes for AYA patients in consultation with the AYA team and the Nutrition and Speech Pathology Department.
•Contribute to raising the profile and position of Peter Mac as a leader in AYA oncology nutrition.
