Senior Data Analyst - Business Intelligence & Analytics

  • Ongoing, full time position (80 hours per fortnight with monthly ADOs)
  • CBD location, with flexible, hybrid working

About the team

The Business Intelligence and Analytics team operates the hospital's Azure-based data warehouse and analytics platform, which provides management reporting and performance insights across the organization. The team supports strategic decision-making and operational performance management for hospital leadership and department managers.

 

About the role

The Senior Data Analyst works directly with hospital departments to understand their information needs, analyse performance data, and deliver insights that support better decision-making. You'll be the bridge between our business stakeholders and the BI development team - translating clinical and operational questions into analytical requirements, designing Power BI reports, and providing ad-hoc analysis to support hospital operations.

About you

The successful applicant will be someone who can work independently with diverse stakeholdes (clinicians, executives, managers) who don't speak data. Healthcare sector experiece, particular within Victorian public hospitals and funding models will be an advantage.

 

You'll bring with you:

  • 3+ years experience as a data/business analyst, preferably in healthcare or complex operational environments
  • Strong SQL skills - comfortable writing queries, joining multiple tables, aggregating data
  • Proven Power BI experience: designing reports, DAX measures
  • Proficiency with Excel
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders - translating between "business speak" and "data speak"
  • Experience gathering requirements from stakeholders and turning them into clear specifications
  • Statistical and analytical thinking - knowing which analysis approach fits which question
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy
  • Comfortable working independently and managing your own priorities across competing demands

Position Summary

The Senior Data Analyst works directly with hospital departments to understand their information needs, analyse performance data, and deliver insights that support better decision-making. You'll be the bridge between our business stakeholders and the BI development team - translating clinical and operational questions into analytical requirements, designing Power BI reports, and providing ad-hoc analysis to support hospital operations.

This role requires someone who can work independently with diverse stakeholders (clinicians, executives, managers) who don't speak data, figure out what they actually need versus what they're asking for, and turn ambiguous business problems into clear data solutions. You'll spend time in meetings understanding context, writing SQL to investigate issues, building reports that people actually use, and specifying requirements for our development team to implement.

We're looking for someone with strong analytical skills, excellent communication, and the confidence to challenge requests constructively.

Healthcare experience is valuable but not essential.

Key Responsibilities

1. Stakeholder Engagement & Requirements

  • Partner with hospital departments (clinical, operations, finance, executive) to understand their data and reporting needs
  • Translate business questions into analytical requirements and technical specifications for the BI development team
  • Challenge and refine vague requests into well-defined problems worth solving
  • Build trusted relationships across the organization as the go-to person for data questions

2. Analysis & Reporting

  • Design and develop Power BI reports and dashboards that clearly answer business questions
  • Perform ad-hoc data analysis using SQL to investigate issues, support decisions, and respond to urgent requests
  • Interpret complex datasets and communicate findings to non-technical audiences
  • Identify data quality issues and work with relevant teams to resolve them
  • Provide Subject Matter Expert guidance on Digital Health datasets

3. Data Products & Submissions

  • Maintain monthly management reporting and statutory submissions (Department of Health reconciliations, activity reporting)
  • Monitor organisational KPIs and flag performance trends or anomalies
  • Continuously improve existing reports based on user feedback and changing business needs

4. Training & Support

  • Provide guidance to staff on data interpretation, report usage, and self-service analytics
  • Document data definitions, business rules, and reporting methodologies
