Ongoing Part Time Role

An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced and self-motivated Cytology Scientist to support our non-gynaecological cytology service within Anatomical Pathology at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

This is a permanent, part-time job-share position (32 hours per fortnight), working Thursdays and Fridays (16 hours per week). The cytology service operates between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM, and this role will also provide leave cover for incumbents as required.

 

Key Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Applied Science degree and Australian Society of Cytology certification (essential)
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in non-gynaecological cytology screening, including:
  • Cytology sample preparation
  • Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) attendance
  • RCPA QAP management
  • Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) in a hospital setting
  • Histological technical skills (advantageous)
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment

Inline with the MEDICAL SCIENTISTS, PHARMACISTS AND PSYCHOLOGISTS VICTORIAN PUBLIC SECTOR (SINGLE INTEREST EMPLOYERS) ENTERPRISE AGREEMENT 2021-2025 salary range from $39,780.547368 to $45,013.389473 depending on experience 

 

Victorian Department of Health has a program of reforms across the public pathology system in Victoria.
As part of these reforms, the pathology services from the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Royal Women’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital are being considered for transition to a new style of service within Local Area Networks. The new model for delivering public pathology services will present an exciting opportunity to improve the scope, scale and reach of pathology services and testing capability to all Victorians.
As this role is with Parkville, the successful candidate for this role will be initially employed by Parkville. However, this position and the successful candidate’s employment (including terms and conditions of employment) may be subject to a transition as part of this reform agenda. Position Summary

The Grade 2 Cytology Scientist in Anatomical Pathology will play a vital role in the preparation and screening of non-gynaecological samples for cytological diagnosis. This position involves supervising, mentoring, and training both technical and scientific staff to uphold best practices in cytological procedures. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of cytology, along with a strong commitment to maintaining quality and safety standards. Essential
  • Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine, Bachelor of Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Science, or equivalent qualification in Anatomical Pathology.
  • Active membership with the Australian Society of Cytology, with ongoing participation in Continuing Education Credit (CEC) activities.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of cytology experience in a NATA-registered diagnostic Anatomical Pathology laboratory, including expertise in cytology specimen preparation and Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) attendance (preferably in a hospital setting).
  • Proficiency in primary screening of cytology specimen slides, with the ability to thoroughly and accurately interpret abnormalities. 
  • Capable of correlating cytology diagnoses with histological findings, where applicable.
  • Proven experience in leading and developing high-quality cytology services, including method and equipment validation & training.
  • Knowledge and application of ISO15189 standards and NPACC guidelines
  • Experience in quality management, quality control and RCPA quality assurance programs.
  • Ensure compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and document all laboratory processes, results, and activities in accordance with accreditation requirements.
  • Participate in internal audits and inspections to maintain laboratory certification.
  • Supervise, and mentor staff, providing guidance, training, and professional development to enhance their skills and performance.
  • Act as a role model in laboratory best practices, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with staff, clinicians, and researchers.
  • Demonstrated continuing professional development (CPD) and ongoing commitment to keeping up to date with advances in cytology and anatomical pathology.
