Full Time Fixed Term Role
Peter Mac Pathology department is seeking a grade 2 scientist to fill a fixed term position within the busy Biochemistry Laboratory. The role is fixed untill November 2026 80 hours per fortnight +ADO.
A Bachelor of Applied Science (medical laboratory science) or equivalent with specialisation in diagnostic biochemistry is reqired
The successful candidate will apply their experience, knowledge, communication skills, and commitment to quality within a dynamic team to assist in the povidion of routine and specialised biochemistry analysis.
salary range from $94,478.8-$106,906.8 depending on experiance.
Victorian Department of Health has endorsed the initiative to restructure existing public pathology by bringing together laboratories into pathology networks operating under a lead health service.
Pathology services from the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Royal Women’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital will transition to a single pathology service. This creates an exciting opportunity to strengthen the scope, scale and reach of pathology services across the Parkville precinct to benefit all Victorians.
This role will transition to the new lead health service for pathology services once determined.

Skills
Essential
- Bachelor of Applied Science (medical laboratory science) or equivalent with specialisation in diagnostic biochemistry
- At least 3 years’ experience in a medical scientific laboratory environment with knowledge in automation and diagnostic Biochemistry
- Specific experience in delivering an ISO 15189 compliant service
- High level verbal and written communication skills (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams & LIMS)
- Knowledge of quality control procedures and review
- Knowledge and experience in instrument troubleshooting and maintenance
- Demonstrable ability to train, supervise and assess staff
- Professional approach to patient care, service confidentiality and provision of pathology/testing services
- Demonstrable ability to meet the clinical expectations of clients • Demonstrate ability to work and communicate cooperatively in a team including other scientists, senior scientists, pathologists, nursing staff, clinical staff and researchers
- Responsible attitude and work ethic
- Experience with laboratory Quality systems
- Experience in laboratory documentation preparation and review.
Desirable
- Experience with electrophoretic techniques
- Participation in providing further education to undergraduate science and/or medical students
- Knowledge and experience with laboratory informatics.
- Knowledge and experience with ELISA techniques

Key Accountabilities
Performance of general biochemistry, protein electrophoresis and specialised testing that contributes to the provision of a safe and effective laboratory service according to laboratory policy and procedures to ensure that workflow through Biochemistry is smooth and optimal.
- Ensure the smooth and efficient operation of daily workflow including specimen receipt, tracking, processing and test performance
- Ability to generate high quality results with acceptable turnaround times by the appropriate and efficient use of laboratory instruments and methods
- Ensures own practices meet key performance indicators of the laboratory
- Ability to perform and report all protein electrophoresis techniques and results
- Monitors and adheres to key performance indicators
- Supervise, delegate and communicate effectively with Biochemistry G1 scientists, technicians and trainees.
- Communicate results as required according to laboratory protocols
- Understands when to escalate identified laboratory issues and or problems.
Results are reported to requesting clinician according to laboratory protocol
- Episode records indicate that results were communicated to the clinician as per laboratory procedures or as requested
- Senior scientific, medical and nursing staff are notified of any significant scientific or technical problems in a timely manner
Outsourced work is reported in a timely manner
- Oversee and ensure overdue and pending test lists are attended to in a timely manner
Laboratory documentation is current and NATA compliant
- Periodic review of laboratory documentation within the laboratories quality management system as directed by the Scientist in charge or delegate.
Ensure instruments are maintained and appropriate quantities of consumables are in stock
- Perform maintenance on the automated biochemistry instruments as determined by their maintenance schedules or as directed by the Scientist in Charge or delegate.
- Participate in monthly inventory stock take.
Training and Supervision
- Take responsibility for training/mentoring of junior staff within Biochemistry.
- Manage the development and monitoring of training/mentoring programs including initial training and competency assessment and maintenance of ongoing competency programs.
Quality Assurance
- Participate in the performing and review of external QA programs.
