Medical Scientist Grade 1 - Cryopreservation

 

  • Ongoing, full time position
  • 80 hours per fortnight with monthly ADOs
  • Grade 1: RX1 - RX7 ($62,426.00 - $89,986.00 per annum) depending on experience

About the role

The Medical Scientist will provide a high quality, effective and innovative cryopreservation service that meets the requirements of the code of Good Manufacturing Practice for Human Blood and Tissues (cGMP), ISO 15189 (Medical Testing), and the clinical needs of patients within Cryopreservation department.

 

About you

You will have a responsible attitude and work ethic with a demonstrable ability to work and communicate cooperatively in a team including other scientists, senior scientists, pathologists, nursing staff, clinical staff, and researchers.

You'll bring with you:

  • B App Sci (Medical Science) or BSc or equivalent with specific training in Haematology
  • Specific experience in delivering an ISO 15189 compliant and cGMP compliant Cryopreservation service
  • Recognised scientific training and competence relevant to the position including knowledge in cell therapy/cryopreservation, analytical methods, and information systems (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, LIMS and Explorer).
  • Appropriate experience and knowledge of haematology.
  • Actively addresses barriers to change, and works collaboratively with the ACT leads and various clinicians within ACT to improve processes for both staff and patients
  • Ability to train and assess staff
  • Hold relevant scientific registration and demonstrate participation in an appropriate Continuing Professional Development program

1. Performance of routine cell processing, testing and quality activities according to PMCC Cryopreservation Laboratory procedures.
  • Smooth and efficient operation of daily workflow, including product receipt, tracking, dispatch where appropriate, cell processing, cryopreservation, preparing product for administration and product release and quality assurance sample collection.
  • Generates high quality cell therapy products with acceptable turn around times in compliance with the current standard operating procedures.
  • Develops and/or applies new technologies relevant to PMCC Cryopreservation Laboratory as required.
  • Ensures instruments are maintained and have minimal down time.
  • Ensures stock compliance within specification is available for cell processing.
  • Asssist in ordering critical materials as needed and ensure sufficient stocks are maintained.
  • Provides scientific support in PMCC Cryopreservation where appropriate.
  • Escalates risks to the Cryopreservation Manager and assists to implement controls to manage/mitigate risk.
  • Ensures own practices meet key performance indicators of the PMCC Cryopreservation Laboratory.
2. Equipment is calibrated and maintained according to laboratory procedures.
  • Laboratory equipment records are completed including start-up procedures, maintenance records, quality assurance and shutdown procedures according current standard operating procedures.
  • Participates in On-Call roster.
3. Quality of manufacturing performance and reporting complies with PMCC Cryopreservation Laboratory policies.
  • Cell processing, testing and documentation consistent with PMCC Cryopreservation Laboratory and cGMP standards.
4. Clinically significant results and NCRs are reported to requesting clinicians and external clients according to HPC/MNC Cryopreservation Laboratory protocols.
  • Episode records and Non Conformances (NCR) are communicated to the Cryopreservation Manager, the clinician, clinical quality and external clients where applicable as per PMCC Cryopreservation Laboratory procedures.
  • Cryopreservation Manager and ACT medical and nursing staff are notified of any significant scientific or technical problems in a timely manner.
  • Non-conformance documents are investigated and completed as required.
  • Participates in generation of reports of PMCC Cryopreservation Laboratory activities as requested by Cryopreservation Manager.

5. Quality Assurance
  • Participates in internal and external QA programs where required.
  • Prepares Standard Operating Procedures and associated Processing Records.
  • Prepares and performs activies as per Validation Protocols (for new processes and/or equipment) including data analysis and Validation Report as appropriate.
  • Prepares Change Control Plans and Risk Assessments where appropriate
  • Adheres to quality systems and procedures of the PMCC Cryopreservation Laboratory.
  • Adheres to PMCC Cryopreservation Laboratory requirements as specified by the Cryopreservation Manager and Clinical Quality team.
  • Promptly reports procedural breakdowns and incidents by means of the non-conformance reporting system.
  • Participates in educational activities including attendance at internal and external training courses, clinical and scientific meetings.
6. Works as part of a team
  • Maintains and develops own specialised skills.
  • Embraces skill extension, innovation and change.
  • Under the direction of senior staff, participates in laboratory and clinical research where appropriate and applicable.
  • Communicates and cooperates with co-workers to ensure work is completed within appropriate timeframes.
  • Assist in after-hours and over-time requirements including late shifts and on-call requirements to support day to day Cryopreservation department operations.
