Research Assistant - Medical Oncology
 

  • 12 months Fixed term, Full-Time parental leave coverage position
  • Targeting Level A: Year 2-3 candidates
  • 80 hours per fortnight with monthly ADO's

This position offers an exciting opportunity to work with Professor Kelly-Anne Phillips’ research team at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (Peter Mac).


In this role you will be a dynamic, flexible team player and will be engaging in diverse projects aimed at treating and preventing breast cancer.
You will take on responsibility for managing day-to-day activities to progress the work in alignment with key milestones. The role requires a proactive and highly motivated individual with appropriate research experience who can establish strong working relationships with internal and external researchers and clinicians.


The ideal candidate will have:

  • Health related qualifications/work experience in a relevant field
  • Research knowledge and experience outside of a laboratory setting
  • Experience with clinical data entry 
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and strong attention to detail
  • Knowledge of breast cancer prevention and treatments would be an advantage

  • Effectively work within Professor Phillips’ research team consisting of other research assistant(s), project manager(s), Research Administration Assistant and higher degree students. Effectively work with other key internal clinicians and researchers, including in implementation science and the Family Cancer Centre
External
  • Clinical, administration and research staff at other key precincts, national and international sites.

 

Skills

Essential Requirements
  • Health related qualifications/work experience in a relevant field
  • Computer skills – competence in the Microsoft office suite.
  • Experience with clinical data entry.
  • Previous experience outside of a laboratory setting.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Organisational skills and ability to work independently as well as within a team.
  • Able to develop and maintain effective relationships with key contacts.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and strong attention to detail
  • Proactive, co-operative and enthusiastic approach to responsibilities.
Desirable Requirements
  • Knowledge of breast cancer prevention and treatments would be an advantage.
  • Experience with REDCap would be advantageous.
  • Experience with EPIC or other Electronic Medical Record system would be an advantage.

 

Key Accountabilities

1. Conduct ethical research
  • Ensure compliance in line with relevant legislation and Peter Mac policies and procedures, including research ethics, equity and health & safety, and exhibit good practice in relation to same.
  • Ensure that studies are undertaken in accordance with the terms approved by the trial sponsor, institutional ethics committee and the NHMRC National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Research Involving Humans.
  • Uses practice guidelines and study specific documentation to ensure that data is recorded accurately and in accordance with regulatory requirements.
2. Research project assistance
  • Assist with data collection in accordance with research protocols.
  • Enter and manage data through the use of REDCap.
  • Conduct literature reviews.
  • Undertake a range of administrative tasks to support the research team manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Contribute to writing of ethics applications and project reports.
  • Able to maintain effective communication processes the research team to ensure information is appropriately documented and shared.
  • Able to make appropriate professional autonomous decisions as required and seek clarification where necessary.
3. Performing research to a high standard
  • Apply careful and precise research techniques.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Ensure careful, accurate and timely record keeping.
  • Follow guidelines for systematic data storage.
