YOUR ROLE IN OUR FUTURE


 Casual Role 

We are currently seeking Registered Undergraduate Students of Nursing (RUSON) to join our dedicated team. As a RUSON, you will work under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, assisting in the delivery of safe and high-quality, patient-centred care across our inpatient wards and limited same-day services. You will be a valued member of the nursing team, contributing to the daily activities of patient care and recovery. This is a casual position commencing in April 2025, offering an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on healthcare experience in a supportive and dynamic healthcare setting.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the delivery of patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse, focusing on activities of daily living, patient comfort, and hygiene.
  • Provide mobility assistance, including bed positioning, transfers, and ambulation
  • Assist with feeding, nutritional support, and elimination needs for patients.
  • Maintain a safe and clean patient environment, always ensuring patient dignity and privacy.
  • Contribute to the documentation of patient care, including relevant observations and actions taken.
  • Ensure that all delegated tasks are completed in line with the RUSON scope of practice and organisational policies.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and other healthcare staff, fostering positive relationships and collaborative care.
  • Participate in ward activities and training sessions to enhance your professional development and skills.


Essential Requirements:

  • Completion of at least one year of an entry-level Bachelor of Nursing degree (or equivalent).
  • Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a student nurse.
  • A genuine commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centred care. •    Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with patients, their families, and the healthcare team.
  • A willingness to learn, seek support when needed, and adhere to the RUSON role boundaries and supervision requirements.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with clinical documentation.
  • Compliance with Peter Mac’s immunisation policies.

 

Desirable Requirements:

  • Previous clinical placement experience at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (PMCC).

Position Summary

The Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing provides support to the nursing team in the delivery of safe and quality patient centered care. The RUSON is required to always work under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse, within their scope of practice, level of education and assessed competencies and under clearly defined role parameters. 
The main objectives of this role are:
To participate in delegated care delivery relating to patient activities of daily living, ensuring that the personal needs and comfort of the patients. 
To assist in providing a safe patient environment through patient supervision.
To enhance patient recovery by assisting with patient bed positioning, transfers, ambulation and other care activities as outlines in the RUSON specific duty list within the care environment.
Within the confines of the RUSON role, to provide general support to the Wards/Units, ensuring effective and efficient care delivery.

Essential Requirements
  • Students who have competed their 1st year of study (or equivalent) and are currently enrolled to an entry to practice Bachelor of Nursing degree, and who is registered with AHPRA as a student nurse.
  • A commitment to Peter Mac values.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • A willingness to contribute to quality patient care.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including an ability to communicate effectively with other staff, patients and families.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and complete tasks and activities as delegated by the supervising registered nurse within the required timeframe.

Key Accountabilities

Patient Care

Under the supervision of the Nurse Unit Manager and or/their registered nurse delegates, the RUSON must observe the RUSON scope of practice guidelines, which may include the following:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to patient-centered care and to work aligned with the Peter Mac values.
  • Work within the RUSON role and defined parameters as determined by the RUSON position description and the specific RUSON Scope of Practice Duty List.
  • Provide delegated aspects of patient care, working within a patient plan of care and the RUSON Scope of Practice (appendix A), including but not limited to:
  • Under direct delegation of a Registered Nurse (RN) and in specific circumstances, the recording of patient vital signs may be undertaken. These vital signs must be promptly reported to the RN each time, following the established escalation pathway.
  • Assistance with personal hygiene and grooming needs.
  • Assistance with nutritional needs including assisting with setting patients up for meals and drinks.
  • Assisting with feeding patients assessed by the registered nurse as appropriate for the RUSON's level of experience.
  • Assistance with mobility, transfers and positioning within the ward. 
  • Assistance with elimination needs when deemed safe by the Registered Nurse.
  • Accept accountability and responsibility for own actions and ensure that work is within the capability and boundaries of the RUSON at all times.
  • Contribute to positive patient outcomes by ensuring all elements of delegated work is completed accurately and in accordance with Peter Mac policies and procedures.
  • Ensure patient privacy and dignity is maintained at all times.
  • Within their level of education and assessed competency, observation and reporting of patients at risk of harm to self I others.
  • Maintain a safe patient environment and report incidents promptly to the supervising Registered Nurse and other relevant member/s of the nursing team.
  • Assist with making beds and keeping the unit environment tidy.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families and the interdisciplinary team.
  • Participate in documentation as determined by the specific RUSON Duty List.
  • Ensure relevant infection control policies are adhered to at all times.
  • Assist to maintain stock levels of ward supplies.
  • Perform other duties within limits of training, skill and competence as outlined in the specific unit duty list to maximise flexibility and efficiency.
  • Accept responsibility to meet all organisational and clinical competencies within allotted timeframe.
  • Participate in regular ward/group meetings and/or education sessions as directed by the Nurse Unit Manager.
  • Document care that sits within the Scope of Position Description and duty lists.

  • Ensures patient dignity and privacy is respected when assisting nurses to provide delegated aspects of care.
  • Maintains an understanding of individual responsibility for patient safety, quality & risk and contributes to organisational quality and safety initiatives.

  • Maintains a safe working environment for self, colleagues and members of the public.
  • Recognises, reports and records incidents promptly and concisely to the supervising registered nurse.  
  • Immediately escalates concerns regarding safety to the supervising registered nurse.
  • Complies with principles of patient- centered care.
  • Complies with Peter Mac mandatory continuing professional development requirements.
Policies, Procedures & Guidelines
  • Ensures compliance with relevant Peter Mac clinical and corporate policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Complies with relevant privacy legislation.
  • Protects confidential information from unauthorised disclosure and does not use, disclose or copy confidential information except for the purpose of and to the extent necessary to perform your employment duties at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
