About the team
The Pharmacy team at Peter Mac plays a key role in supporting high-quality patient care, incorporating all facets of innovative clinical pharmacy practice, including personalised medicine strategies and clinical pharmacogenomics. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, the pharmacogenomics pharmacy team facilitates germline pharmacogenomics screening, patient consent and education, and implements pharmacogenomic-guided medicines optimisation recommendations for patients planned for select systemic anticancer therapies. With a strong focus on innovation, quality, and collaboration, the team contributes directly to advancing personalised medicines strategies through research and improving outcomes, keeping patient care at the centre of everything we do

 

About the role

As a Grade 2 Pharmacogenomics Pharmacist, you will develop a solid understanding and working experience of pharmacogenomics in oncology. You will also enrol into and undertake a full-time practice-based PhD in pharmacogenomics research within oncology and solid organ transplantation, progressing EMR (electronic medical record) optimisation, and broadening education strategies, as part of a 2025 MRFF Grant, ‘Trial Implementation of Pharmacogenomics to improve Complex Hospital Care.’

Position Summary

To work within a team to deliver a pharmacist-led pharmacogenomics program in line with Standard of Care practices at Peter Mac and support clinical trial activity through a practice based PhD enabled through the 2025 MRFF Grant funded ‘Trial Implementation of Pharmacogenomics to improve Complex Hospital care.’

Specially, the successful candidate will through their PhD:
- Create and evaluate new tools and resources needed for routine use of pharmacogenomics including: a) health informatics to manage and communicate pharmacogenomics data and clinical implications in the EMR and b) workforce preparation through extension of our existing training tools to a universal pharmacogenomics education program.
- Coordinate the clinical study activity at Peter Mac by developing processes for patient identification, eligibility and enrolment and subsequent data collection, for trialling real-world performance of an optimised pharmacogenomics panel testing pathway to guide practice, in comparison to current limited implementations, in cancer treatment and solid organ transplant.

Essential Requirements
  • Qualified Pharmacist, registered with the Pharmacy Board of Australia (AHPRA)
  • At least 2 years of hospital pharmacy experience and clinical pharmacy practice
  • Experience in clinical trials, research or project management
  • Up to date training or willingness to undertake training in Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
  • Demonstrated competency in the following areas: quality use of medicines including patient counselling and provision of drug information, dispensing medicines, pharmacy practice skills, organisational and management skills.
  • Demonstrates a track record consistent with University of Melbourne entry criteria for PhD candidature including successful application to University of Melbourne
 
Desirable Requirements
  • Experience in pharmacy practice in cancer care
  • Interest in pharmacogenomics and/or therapeutic drug monitoring
  • Experience with REDCap or other database

1. Pharmacogenomics clinical service delivery
  • Participating as an active member of the pharmacogenomics team equivalent to 1-2 days per week, to promote the optimal use and timing of pharmacogenomic tests; interpreting clinical pharmacogenomic test results; and educating other pharmacists and fellow health care professionals, patients, and the public about pharmacogenomic screening and the field of pharmacogenomics. The following are responsibilities that should be part of any clinical pharmacogenomics service.
    • Completes Peter Mac requirements for pharmacogenomics.  
    • Advocates for the rational and routine use of pharmacogenomic testing.
    • Provides test result interpretation and clinical guidance for return of results to providers and patients in collaboration with other health care professionals (e.g., physicians, laboratory professionals, and genetic counsellors).
    • Optimises medication therapy based on pharmacogenomic test results.
    • Educates and provides information on the clinical application of pharmacogenomics to health professionals, patients, and members of the public.
    • Conducts day-to-day activities under Clinical trial protocols and standard of care pathways, as required to assist other clinic pharmacists with workload.
    • Supports development of pharmacogenomic-specific clinical decision support tools in electronic medical record system that guide prescribers on the appropriate use and dosing of medicines.
    • Able to explain pharmacogenomics implications to patients and seek patient consent for enrolment onto trial(s).
    • Compliance with all ethics and regulatory reporting.
    • Maintenance of trial documents (i.e. logs, manuals, regulatory, protocols, Participant Information Sheet and Consent Forms) and REDCap database
