Pathology Collector Grade 2
Part Time Fixed Term role until March 2026

 

We are looking for a Pathology collector for a busy and dynamic outpatient pathology clinic situated at Peter Mac. You will help provide excellent patient experience by correctly and skilfully collecting, labelling, packaging, and timely dispatch of pathology specimens to the laboratory.

 

The role is fixed term until March 2026, 30 hours per week available.
Mainly Monday to Friday with some Saturday shifts available.


About You:


•    Certificate III or Certificate IV in Pathology Collection
•    Develop and maintain a high standard of customer service
•    Excellent communication skills and ability to work within a multidisciplinary team

 

In line with the Enterprise Agreement Health and Allied Services, Managers and Administrative Workers, salary offered is $62,540.40. Additionally, there may be other entitlements or allowances, as per the EA.

Position Summary

To provide quality pathology collection service to inpatients and outpatients.  

The Pathology Collector is accountable for:
•    Correctly and skillfully collecting, labeling, packaging, and timely dispatch of pathology specimens to the laboratory.
•    Providing an excellent patient experience
•    The accurate recording of patient information regarding patients and specimens in accordance with practice instructions
•    Maintaining a high level of skill in pathology specimen collection adhering to infection control policies.
•    Performing Electrocardiography (ECG).
•    Performing Intravenous Cannulation (IVC).
•    Rapid health assessments of patients presenting to Outpatient Pathology Department.

1. Pathology Collection Practices
•    Demonstrate expertise in pathology collection to ensure the provision of quality of care to all patients
•    Maintain an up to date knowledge of departmental policies and procedures and Hospital Policy and Procedures.
•    Collection of specimens from the right patient and the right specimen type at all times, adhering the patient identification policy and process.
•    Advise Nurse Unit Manager and/or Associate Nurse Unit Manager of any adverse episodes whilst in the performance of duties.
•    Practice with direct or indirect supervision of the Registered Nurse (Div 1) in a complementary and collaborative role providing high quality care.
•    Demonstrate professional accountability related to work practice.
•    Apply assessment skills which are context specific and relevant to care of the oncology patient within scope of practice.
•    Recognise and respond to patient’s individual needs in a professional manner.

•    Responds to patient needs in a safe and timely fashion.
•    Quality Indicators and feedback demonstrate commitment to quality patient care.
•    High level of patient satisfaction.

2. Communication & Documentation
•    Work as a member of a multidisciplinary team and contribute to the effective communication with other pathology collection team members to provide the best care for patients  
•    Develop and maintain a high standard of customer service respecting the wishes of the patient.
•    Documentation to reflect legal and professional requirements, and continuity of care.

•    Feedback from NUM and supervising Division 1 RN indicates workload being managed effectively and efficiently.
•    Evidence of accurate and complete documentation that adheres to hospital pathology procedures.

3. Education & Continuous Development
•    Demonstrate responsibility for own learning through attendance at relevant short course programs.
•    Initiate strategies to promote the learning of colleagues and others.
•    Contribute to the development and review of unit based philosophies, policies, procedures and protocols
•    Adhere to all Peter Mac policies, procedures and guidelines and demonstrate competency in performing technical skills relevant to level of expertise
•    Participate in in-service education program provided by the department.
•    Attend and participate in regular team meetings as directed by Nurse Unit Manager.
•    Maintain Emergency Procedure Training on an annual basis and Mandatory training within the Pathology Department, including Basic Life Support, No Lift/Manual Handling Training and Patient Assessment.

 

4. Improving Performance
•    Participate in relevant departmental activities and work proactively with the patient and health care team to achieve desired outcome goals
•    Participate in quality improvement activities and ensure outcomes from quality improvement processes are incorporated into practice.
•    Commitment to Quality and Accreditation procedures and policies.
•    Participate and contribute to the development of outpatients specific Key Performance Indicators.
•    Advise Nurse Unit Manager and/or Associate Nurse Unit Manager of any unsafe practices in breech of OHS policy.

•    Evidence of participation in quality improvement and evidence based practice activities
•    Assists with monitoring Key Performance Indicators.
