THE ENHANCED CARE UNIT
The Enhanced Care Unit at Peter Mac is an innovative unit which has been operational for just over 12 months and provides high quality, specialised care for cancer patients requiring higher levels of monitoring and clinical support. This enhanced model of care in internationally recognised. Patients within the unit may require invasive and non-invasive continuous blood pressure monitoring, advanced haemodynamic support, continuous cardiac monitoring, high flow oxygen, complex fluid and medication infusions including noradrenaline, epidurals, or intrathecal opioids.  The Enhanced Care Unit is a six-bed unit located at Peter Mac’s Parkville Campus. The unit has two negative pressure isolation rooms and four patient bays all with line of sight from the main nurses’ station. The unit runs 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
 
THE PATIENTS
Peter Mac cares for patients with a complex array of cancer types that require treatments that are integrated and carefully planned. Treatments may involve several modalities such as medicines, surgery, radiotherapy and in more recent years the growth of immunotherapies have seen significant advances. As the treatments for cancer have advanced, we have seen increased complexity and acuity of care needs for our patients. The Enhanced Care Unit was introduced to ensure we continue to deliver world’s best cancer care that meets the needs of our patients.
 
THE TEAM
The Enhanced Care Unit includes a Nurse Unit Manager, Clinical Nurse Educator, Associate Nurse Unit Managers and Registered Nurses who work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe and high-quality care for our patients. The Enhanced Care Unit works closely with the High Acuity Team including the ICU Outreach Nurses, the Academic Nursing Unit and Specialist Medical teams.  There is a strong relationship with the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department to ensure patients are cared for in the most appropriate setting.    

 

THE OPPORTUNITY
The Nurse Unit Manager position is an opportunity to lead in the ongoing establishment and evaluation of the Enhanced Care Unit at Peter Mac.  The role will involve working with the clinical leads to ensure the services within the unit align with the care needs of the patients and support the development of polices and guidelines to ensure safe and appropriate patient care.  Working with the Clinical Nurse Educator to develop an education and training plan will also be a key aspect of this role.  This role is an opportunity to be involved in the ongoing development of a dynamic and evolving area of complex and high acuity cancer care at Peter Mac.   
 
YOU
We are seeking an experienced Nurse Unit Manager with experience in ICU or HDU and a postgraduate qualification in critical care nursing. You will have human and financial resource management capability, proven ability to lead and experience in the implementation of quality improvement, work practice reform and change within a large organisation.  
 
Remuneration as per Nurses and Midwives (Victorian Public Sector) (Single Interest Employers) Enterprise Agreement 2024-2028. Nurse Manager 3 (NM11) $126,074.00 per annum (full-time rate – to be prorated for part-time hours) to Nurse Manager 4 (NM12) $130,509.60 per annum (full-time rate – to be prorated for part-time hours) dependent on candidate experience. To be discussed with Hiring Manager.

The Enhanced Care Unit Nurse Unit Manger (NUM) is a senior leadership position with considerable experience and knowledge in critical care nursing. The NUM provides leadership, accountability and oversight within the Enhanced Care Unit.

Essential Requirements • AHPRA Registered Nurse Division 1
• Postgraduate qualification in critical care nursing
• Recent experience, demonstrated knowledge and expertise in ICU or HDU nursing
• A demonstrated knowledge and experience in the management and delivery of a health care service.
• Human and financial resource management capability
