Nurse Unit Manager - Metro Project 

  • 12-month fixed term, full time position (parental leave coverage)
  • 80 hours per fortnight with monthly ADOs
  • Paid at NUM Level 2: NM11 - $137,966.40 p.a.

 

About the team & role

An exciting opportunity exists for a NUM, within Cancer Imaging East Melbourne.

The position reports to the Operations Director, Cancer Imaging. It is a dynamic role responsible for nursing leadership and governance of nursing related patient care at Cancer Imaging at East Melbourne. The role also works closely with the NUM of Cancer Imaging at Parkville with co-ordination and working collaboratively to manage the imaging nursing team. 

The role is required to work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary teams in Cancer Imaging provide leadership of evidence based, quality and cost-effective nursing practice to support patient centred care. The role will support transition of the MRI service back to Parkville in 2026. 

 

About you

The successful candidate will have a recent experience in nursing leadership, with a proven ability to lead a team and work effectively within a multi-disciplinary setting.

  • Postgraduate qualification in specialist oncology or radiology nursing, or equivalent
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated knowledge and expertise in acute care nursing
  • Proven human and financial resource management capability
  • Excellent communication and proven ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to drive patient centred outcomes 
  • An understanding of, and experience with, developing evidence-based practice
  • Demonstrated involvement in professional activities and organisations including membership of the Cancer Nursing Society of Australia, ACN

Position Summary

The position of NUM, Cancer Imaging Parkville is a dynamic role responsible for nursing leadership and governance of nursing related patient care across Cancer Imaging at Parkville. The role also works closely with the NUM of Peter Mac Imaging at East Melbourne with co-ordination and supervision of the human resources across 2 sites.  Cancer Imaging also has an operational relationship with the Royal Melbourne MRI service and the NUM Parkville is responsible for the model of care supporting safe inpatient transfers to Royal Melbourne MRI service.
The role is required to work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary teams in Cancer Imaging provide leadership of evidence based, quality and cost-effective nursing practice to support patient centred care.

Essential Requirements

  • Responsible for procurement of medical consumables and safe storage within Cancer Imaging storerooms in conjunction with infection prevention, procurement and inventory clerk  
  • Leads recruitment, selection, retention, and performance management of nursing staff with view to have right staff in right role to meet needs of service
  • Supports senior nursing staff to create a dynamic, positive learning culture for each staff member and to take constructive action if a discrepancy is recognised between actual performance, and performance requirement
  • Ensures a career pathway is embedded to support nurses in key roles within Cancer Imaging nursing team

3. Education and Clinical Practice Leadership     

  • Recognised as a resource and role model for Cancer Imaging clinical services throughout nursing services at Peter Mac 
  • Ensure the delivery of a high standard of evidence-based care to patients 
  • Leadership of an environment committed to learning and practice development from undergraduate nurses, graduate nurses to nurse leadership roles 
  • Delivery of a strategic professional development plan for Cancer Imaging service delivery incorporating effective succession planning and aligning individual staff plans with the strategic framework using relevant instruments i.e. performance reviews.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary leads in Cancer Imaging to support ongoing development of the clinical services delivery model 
  • Support and promote excellence and autonomy in clinical practice and patient care 

4. Quality Improvement and Research

  • Establishes and enables a culture of performance improvement and evaluation, and develops and evaluates new initiatives to mitigate risk ensuring quality of nursing care and excellent patient outcomes
  • Directs and oversees the development of KPIs and quality activities planning for nursing service. Ensures adherence and delivery against Service KPIs through active engagement with staff and role modelling
  • Ensures proactive preparation and successful participation of Cancer Imaging in accreditation activities
  • Identifies opportunities for and actively participates in educational and research activity within Cancer Imaging 
  • Leads and participates in the implementation of evidence-based practice
  • Informs and collaborates with clinical trials teams to support patient clinical trials and generate new nursing knowledge to contribute to a research-based clinical practice environment.
  • Maintains current knowledge of trends in imaging and cancer nursing practice
