Medical Specialist - Breast Surgeon - Precinct

The Royal Melbourne Hospital, The Royal Women’s Hospital and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre run the Parkville Breast Service which functions as a single service offering. The unit treats a comprehensive range of all malignant and benign breast conditions, treating over 500 primary cancers per year and collaborating with research efforts from basic laboratory science to late-stage clinical trials. It is supported by all the ancillary services and expertise of the three hospitals and is one of the leading breast centres in the country.
The Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre are pleased to offer a combined appointment for a Specialist Breast Surgeon, totally between 0.5-0.6 EFT for the successful candidate. The position will offer a variety of clinics and operating sessions across the precinct and will be the first formal such appointment across the precinct. We expect the successful candidate to be a critical member of the breast service for the next 10-20 years.

Consultant surgeon in the Integrated Parkville Precinct Breast Unit. This encompasses the Breast and Endocrine Surgery Unit at RMH, the Breast Unit at RWH and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre’s Breast Unit.

Position Summary
The purpose of this role is:
- Work as a cross-site member of the Integrated Parkville Precinct Breast Care Service.
- To participate in patient care, teaching, education, and clinical research, across all three campuses and UoM.
- To Participate in a range of clinical activities relating to breast disease in line with being a Tertiary Referral Centre
- Ensure surgical outcomes exceed or at least meet national and international benchmarks
- Collaborate on a laboratory based locoregional breast cancer work program
- Provide leadership in quality assurance and audit activities for the breast service as a whole
- Comply with Quality Management policies and procedures and participate in Quality Management activities for the Breast unit within the Department of General Surgical Specialties. Support and participate in the
- Health Service OH&S Procedures and implement (where appropriate) at unit/service area level.
- Assist in maintaining a safe work environment by reporting any incidents of unsafe work practices, sites/areas or equipment.

Key Accountabilities
- Reports to the Director of the Integrated Parkville Precinct Breast Care Service
- In consultation with the Director of the Integrated Parkville Precinct Breast Care Service, and relevant clinical directors from other areas, develop a dedicated research/education portfolio in locoregional breast cancer
- Participate in Breast Surgery clinics and provide quality patient assessments.
- Participate in inpatient duties, including operating theatre sessions, post-operative ward management, inpatient consultations and referrals as required.
- Provide supervision and performance management of junior medical staff (residents, registrars & fellows) throughout the inpatient and outpatient settings
- Participate in the Victorian Breast Screen Service
- Participate in quality monitoring activities and continual quality improvement
- Participate in the Multidisciplinary meetings of the Integrated Parkville Precinct Breast Care Service.
- Contribute to clinical trials
- Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching to all varieties of clinicians as required
- Participate in unit quality monitoring activities and continual quality improvement
- Support and participate in the Health Services OHS procedures and implement where appropriate at unit/service level.
- Assist in maintaining a safe work environment by reporting any incidents of unsafe work practices, site/areas or equipment.
