Full Time Fixed Term

Peter Mac Haematology laboratory is seeking an energetic and enthusiastic scientist to join our team in this 12 months fixed-term role. The successful applicant will predominantly work during the day shift however, will also participate in the core laboratory after-hours, weekend and public holiday roster. Morphology experience is desirable. Salary range between $63,674-$91,785.2 based on years of experience.You will have a B App Sc (Medical Science) or equivalent with specific training in haematology and transfusion science.

Victorian Department of Health has endorsed the initiative to restructure existing public pathology by bringing together laboratories into pathology networks operating under a lead health service. 
Pathology services from the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Royal Women’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital will transition to a single pathology service.  This creates an exciting opportunity to strengthen the scope, scale and reach of pathology services across the Parkville precinct to benefit all Victorians.
This role will transition to the new lead health service for pathology services once determined.

Position Summary

The position will support the 24/7 after-hours Core Laboratory service via the provision of a high quality, effective and innovative pathology service in Haematology, Blood Bank, Coagulation, CSR and Biochemistry that meets the requirements of NATA as per ISO 15189 (Medical Testing) and the clinical needs of patients.

Essential Requirements
•B App Sc (Medical Science) or BSc or equivalent with specific training in Haematology and Transfusion science.
•Specific experience in delivering an ISO15189 compliant service.
•Recognised scientific training and competence relevant to the position including knowledge in haematology, coagulation, blood bank, analytical methods and information systems (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, LIMS)
•Professional approach to patient care, service confidentiality and provision of pathology/testing services.
•Ability to work within 24/7 roster including weekends and public holidays.
•Demonstrable ability to meet the clinical expectations of clients.
•Demonstrable ability to work and communicate cooperatively in a team including other scientists, senior scientists, pathologists, nursing staff, clinical staff and researchers.
•Responsible attitude and work ethic.

Key Accountabilities

1. Performance of routine specimen reception duties, general specimen processing and validation according to laboratory procedures
•Smooth and efficient operation of daily work-flow, including specimen receipt, tracking, processing, test performance and all out-of-hours work.
•Ability to generate high quality results with acceptable turn-around times by appropriate and efficient use of laboratory instruments and methods.
•Monitors and adheres to key performance indicators.
•Instruments are maintained and have minimal down time.
•Ensures own practices meet key performance indicators of the laboratory. 
2. Performance of routine Haematology duties that contributes to the provision of a safe and effective diagnostic service according to laboratory policies and procedures •Safe and efficient performance of scientific duties, including specimen receipt/confirmation, processing, test performance according to laboratory SOPs
•Ability to generate high quality results with acceptable turn-around times by the appropriate and efficient use of haematology lab systems. 
3. Workflow through Haematology is smooth and optimal •Supervise, delegate and communicate effectively with Haematology scientists, technicians and trainees.
•Communicate and work effectively with entire CSR team.
•Communicate and work effectively with all Corelab team.
4. Outsourced work is reported in a timely manner •Oversee and ensure overdue and pending test lists are attended to in a timely manner.
5. Laboratory documentation is current and NATA compliant •Ensures all laboratory SOPs are reviewed and acknowledged in a timely manner
6. Equipment is calibrated and maintained according to laboratory policy and procedures     •Laboratory equipment records are completed including start-up procedures, maintenance records, quality assurance and shutdown procedures according to laboratory, NATA and ISO 15189 standards and protocols.
 
7.Quality of blood film reporting complies with laboratory protocol
 
•Blood film morphology reports consistent with acceptable laboratory standards.
8.Clinically significant results are reported to requesting clinician according to laboratory protocol •Episode records indicate the results were communicated to the clinician as per laboratory procedures.
•Senior scientific, medical and nursing staff are notified of any significant scientific or technical problems in a timely manner.
