Peter Mac boasts a comprehensive range of imaging, planning and treatment equipment distributed across five sites, four city and one regional. This includes seven CT scanners with 4D imaging capability, PET-CT scanner, 16 linear accelerators, many of which are equipped with kilo-voltage imaging (including cone beam CT) and a Gamma Knife.

 

The Physical Sciences department’s primary role is to provide support for Peter Mac’s radiotherapy services. This includes project planning, commissioning and quality assurance of equipment, radiation safety, clinical dosimetry, and planning of specialized treatments. There are many opportunities for clinically relevant research and development. Current multidisciplinary research projects are primarily focused on the clinical introduction of new imaging and treatment techniques. Physicists are encouraged to engage in tumour stream activities.

 

Currently, we have an opportunity to employ a Radiation Oncology Medical Physicist (ROMP), to work at our 4-Linac Moorabbin site. Our Moorabbin campus is a leading centre for surface guidance, stereotactic radiotherapy and recently installed a dual energy CT scanner for planning. We are also one of the few locations where electronic brachytherapy is available. This role is suited to both dynamic and aspiring physicists with experience implementing new techniques/technologies into the clinic.

 

Applicants are required to have a post-graduate qualification in medical physics. Applicants are expected to hold certification by ACPSEM (or an equivalent certification) and to be on the register of qualified medical physicists maintained by the ACPSEM. This position will require some out-of-hours duties, which may include weekend work. Flexibility to work at other Peter Mac campuses is also required.

Applicants will be appointed to the position of Medical Physicist, Grade 3 FF9-FF12 depending on experience. Generous salary packaging options are also available.

Skills

Essential Requirements

 

  • Master’s degree in medical physics 
  • At least 3 years’ experience in radiation oncology medical physics and radiation safety
  • ACPSEM Certification in Radiation Oncology Medical Physics or a recognised equivalent qualification

 

Desirable Requirements

 

  • Demonstrated skills in advanced imaging, radiation safety, commissioning, brachytherapy or a field of research in line with current or emerging radiotherapy techniques

1. Clinical Services

  • Makes original contributions and applies new medical physics approaches and techniques to the clinical service
  • Ensuring treatment plan checking is completed in a timely and effective manner.
  • Provide advice on treatment techniques and radiotherapy planning approaches.
  • Being a member of at least one Tumour Stream determined in conjunction
    with the director and participation in clinical chart rounds.
  • Perform in-vivo dosimetry measurement of patient treatment and prepare the report.

2. Equipment related services

  • Co-ordinate and perform routine quality assurance tasks of radiotherapy equipment.
  • Performance and documentation of non-routine quality assurance of all equipment following repair and maintenance in line with departmental guidelines.
  • Support of department wide (cross campus) development of equipment related QA activities and procedures

3. To provide effective clinical support
  • Be available for physics consultations with various professional groups and maintain relevant clinical skills.
  • Flexibility to work across a range of morning and evening shifts and occasional weekend shifts.
  • Some flexibility to work at Peter Mac campuses may be required.

4. Strong problem solving ability

  • Proactively contributes to solving clinical problems involving clinical objectives, technical and scientific expertise

5. Supervise and mentor junior medical physicists and registrars

  • Supervision of QA related activities of grade 1& 2 staff.
  • Retention and progression of junior staff

6. Professional knowledge, development and training

  • Maintenance of valid radiation use licence, ROMP registration.
  • Participation and contribution in CPD meetings, journal clubs, project meetings.
7. Communications effectively with radiation therapists, radiation oncologists and engineers
  • Good rapport with all staff
