Ongoing Full Time Role.
The Molecular Pathology Labortory in the Department of Pathology is looking for a Laboratory Technician to join our team to help support the molecular diagnostic service. The position will be within our preanalytics section involved in registration and processing of specimens for molecular testing. The ongoing full-time position presents an exciting opportunity to gain invaluable experience in this rapidly growing field.
Suitable candidates will be highly motivated and self-driven, and possess a relevant diploma/degree in science with genetics or molecular biology experience preferred. Previous experience working in an accredited Pathology laboratory with specimen registration would be an advantage.
This role is Permanent full-time 80 hours a fortnight with ADO
Victorian Department of Health has recently announced a program of reforms across the public pathology system in Victoria.
As part of these reforms, the pathology services from the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Royal Women’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital will transition to a new separate public pathology entity. The new model for delivering public pathology services will present an exciting opportunity to improve the scope, scale and reach of pathology services and testing capability to all Victorians.
As this role is with Parkville, the successful candidate for this role will be initially employed by Parkville. Once the new public pathology entity is fully formed, which is anticipated to be in late 2024, this position and the successful candidate’s employment (including terms and conditions of employment) will transition to the new public pathology entity. Position Summary
To provide technical support to the molecular pathology department.
Key duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
• specimen receipt and accessioning, handling histology slides and paraffin blocks for molecular studies, DNA / RNA extraction and quantitation, tissue microdissections, tissue culture
• performing standard molecular assays including: PCR, ddPCR, QPCR, HRM, Sanger Sequencing, MLPA, Next Generation Sequencing
• operation and maintenance of equipment
• general laboratory duties
This role will contribute to the University of Melbourne's partnership with international genomics company Illumina by collaborating with The Advanced Genomics Collaboration by jointly fostering the development of world-leading genomics research and innovation activities and to accelerate the translation of these innovation through to adoption in the healthcare system.
