The Molecular Pathology Laboratory in the Department of Pathology is looking for an experienced Laboratory Technician to join our team to support the molecular diagnostic service. As a member of the Laboratory Operations Support team, you will assist the Molecular Pathology Laboratory in providing the highest quality of molecular services to the patients of Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and its external clients. Responsibilities include:

 

  • Managing laboratory inventory, including sample management, assets/equipment, and laboratory supplies
  • Coordination of pipette calibration and servicing
  • Involvement in procurement activity using FMIS Oracle and iLab
  • Assisting with stock and asset audits
  • Coordinating laboratory activities with lab users, building partners and external service teams
  • General laboratory duties including waste management and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment

Victorian Department of Health has recently announced a program of reforms across the public pathology system in Victoria. As part of these reforms, the pathology services from the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Royal Women’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital will transition to a new separate public pathology entity. The new model for delivering public pathology services will present an exciting opportunity to improve the scope, scale and reach of pathology services and testing capability to all Victorians.


As this role is with Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the successful candidate for this role will be initially employed by Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Once the new public pathology entity is fully formed, which is anticipated to be in late 2024, this position and the successful candidate’s employment (including terms and conditions of employment) will transition to the new public pathology entity. Position Summary

To support the Molecular Pathology Laboratory to provide the highest quality of molecular services to the patients of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and its external clients. This position will work closely with Laboratory Operations Support to maintain the laboratory facilities.

Key duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
• managing laboratory inventory including performing regular stocktake, monitoring stock expiry and rotation, receipt of deliveries, restocking of laboratory areas.
• involvement in procurement activity including placing orders, maintaining relationships with suppliers, and forecasting reagent and consumable requirements.
• asset management including routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and coordination of pipette calibration and servicing.
• maintaining accurate records related to inventory management and laboratory assets, assisting with stock and asset audits.
• general laboratory duties including waste management, workstation decontamination, and preparation of reagents and chemicals.
• specimen receipt, accessioning and filing.

1. Performs general laboratory duties • Laboratory duties performed daily including reagent preparation, waste disposal, reagent & consumables restocking, maintaining laboratory tidiness.
• Administrative duties as required.
2. Laboratory inventory management • Performs regular stock counts, identifies reagents & consumables to be purchased.
• Submits orders for catalogue and non-catalogue items via FMIS Oracle for approval.
• Communicates procurement activity with internal laboratory users and external vendors.
• Enters reagent & consumable purchases into the laboratory inventory system, ensures quantities are accurately represented.
• Monitors the timely arrival of orders and communicates any delays.
• Receipts stock into the laboratory inventory system and performs QC checks. Stores items appropriately and manages stock rotation based on laboratory usage. 
• Identifies local distributors, requests product information and quotations.
• Maintains accurate and up to date stocktake sheets.
3. Asset management • All equipment general maintenance performed and recorded in accordance with equipment and procedure manuals.
• Coordinates equipment routine maintenance activities and repair. 
• Ensures maintenance activity is recorded in the laboratory quality system.
• Communicates equipment availability with laboratory users.
4. Pipette maintenance • All pipette maintenance performed and recorded in accordance with equipment and procedure manuals.
• Maintains the pipette calibration and servicing schedule.
• Coordinates calibration and servicing with external vendors including requesting quotations, completion of documentation and preparation of pipettes for collection.
• Ensures pipette calibration and servicing reports are recorded in the laboratory quality system.
• Communicates pipette maintenance activity with laboratory users.
5. Database entry of patient requests/information into pathology laboratory systems • Prompt and accurate data entry. Uses relevant pathology-related programs, packages and functions to keep track of and complete tasks effectively and efficiently.
6. Sourcing and receipting of pathological specimens for testing from external laboratories • Accurate and timely request, follow up and distribution upon receipt of pathological materials.
7. Screens incoming telephone calls and directs telephone enquiries • Ensures phones are covered at all times and refers calls appropriately.
