Fixed Term Full Time Role

An exciting opportunity is available for a Medical Laboratory Technician to join the Anatomical Pathology team at Peter Mac. This is a full-time, fixed-term contract for 12 months to cover maternity leave.

The successful candidate will contribute to the provision of histology, cytology, and specialist services, while also supporting cutting-edge research programs.
Salary range between $58,047.60 - $74,848.80 dependent on experience

 

Key Requirements:

  • High-quality technical experience in a diagnostic Anatomical Pathology laboratory
  • Strong understanding and experience in Histology techniques, including:
  • Embedding
  • Microtomy
  • Specimen accessioning
  • Equipment maintenance
  • Block and slide filing
  • Experience in Cytology prep (highly desirable)
  • Availability to work between 5 AM and 6 PM, Monday to Friday
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to thrive in a team environment

Victorian Department of Health has a program of reforms across the public pathology system in Victoria.
As part of these reforms, the pathology services from the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Royal Women’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital are being considered for transition to a new style of service within Local Area Networks. The new model for delivering public pathology services will present an exciting opportunity to improve the scope, scale and reach of pathology services and testing capability to all Victorians.
As this role is with Parkville, the successful candidate for this role will be initially employed by Parkville. However, this position and the successful candidate’s employment (including terms and conditions of employment) may be subject to a transition as part of this reform agenda. Education

Associate Diploma of Applied Science
Advanced Diploma in Laboratory Technology

Skills

  • Certificate or Associate Diploma of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory), a Certificate, Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Laboratory Technology or Laboratory Operations or equivalent 
  • Experience in diagnostics, research laboratory or clinical trial testing specifically Anatomical Pathology 
  • Experience in one or more of the following disciplines; microtomy, embedding, immunohistochemistry, standard Anatomical Pathology techniques. 
  • Demonstrable abilities to work effectively within a team. 
  • Works well under pressure and enjoys diverse portfolio of duties as required by the clinical trial portfolio. 
  • Enjoys flexible work environment. 
  • Recognised scientific training and competence relevant to the position including appropriate knowledge and experience in laboratory services, quality systems and information technology.

1.Processing and testing of samples fo clinical trials involving Anatomical Pathology techniques

  • Providing assistance in the area of Anatomical Pathology such as microtomy, embedding, HE staining, FISH preparation, etc.
  • Actively assist with Anatomical Pathology testing for clinical trials, research and projects to ensure testing is completed within appropriate time frames.
  • High and efficient microtomy skills.
  • Demonstration of an understanding of customer service for internal and external customers and a commitment to effectively meeting their needs in a helpful and professional manner.
  • Keeps patient information confidential.
  • Monitors, and adheres to key performance indicators.
  • All documentation is completed including procedures, maintenance records and quality assurance procedures according to laboratory, NATA ISO15189 and 17025, GCP, GLP and GDP standards.

2.Operates and maintains laboratory equipment as required

  • All equipment is operated and maintained in accordance with laboratory manuals and procedures.
  • Ensures the maintenance records of laboratory equipment are kept according to laboratory protocols.

3.Uses the laboratory quality system for processing and testing of all samples and has a basic understanding of the clinical implications of laboratory results.

  • Ensures the appropriate identification and labelling of specimens and request forms, processing of all specimens for assay or dispatch to other laboratories, data entry of all relevant patient and testing information.
  • Contacts the relevant client or other staff when additional information is required or specimens cannot be processed according to the clinical trial protocol.
  • Is familiar with the internal and external quality control activities within the laboratory and complies with the relevant QC protocols.

4.Recognises and reports any clinically significant results to the appropriate staff member and any laboratory problems to senior scientific staff.

  • Liaises well with other staff members to ensure that all testing adheres to the relevant protocols.
  • Seeks the advice of colleagues to solve any scientific and technical problems in the laboratory.
