Laboratory Technician Grade 1
Fixed Term, Full Time Role – 80 Hours per Fortnight with a monthly ADO
 
The Parkville Cancer Clinical Trial Unit coordinates clinical trials across the three hospitals of the Parkville precinct: The Royal Women's Hospital, The Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. We are the largest cancer clinical trials unit in the country, and we have an exciting portfolio of First Time in Human to Phase 3 trials covering all areas of haematology and oncology. 
 
We are seeking a Grade 1 Laboratory Technician to fill a 6-month temporary vacancy while a staff member is seconded to another role.
 
Previous experience in a specimen reception or hospital laboratory environment is desirable but not essential. Please note, this is not a research laboratory position. The role primarily involves routine laboratory tasks, including the processing of blood samples for freezing and shipment to external laboratories.
 
This is a fast-paced position requiring strong attention to detail and the ability to work efficiently and accurately. The successful candidate will liaise regularly with hospital staff and couriers; therefore, well-developed communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

Remuneration as per Allied Health Professionals (Victorian Public Sector) (Single Interest Employers) Enterprise Agreement 2021-2026, MEDI LAB TECH Grade 1 (BU1): $59,207.20 – (BU8): $76,346.40 (full-time equivalent - to be prorated for Part Time) dependent on candidate experience.   • Graduate qualifications in a science related field

Key Accountabilities

1. Central Lab Sample Processing

 

  • Is able to read a protocol and lab manual and ascertain the essential central lab sample requirements for the study. 
  • Document all central samples used in the lab correctly.
  • Processes central samples according to protocol without error. 
  • Prepares and packs samples appropriately for shipping.
  • Works with the Couriers to ensure samples are shipped correctly.
  • Documents the processing of samples effectively for the trial team.
  • Works with the teams to ensure batched samples are shipped within the specified timelines in the lab manual.

 

2. Manages the central lab samples aspects of trial undertaken in the PCCTU

 

  • Plan for the management  of samples that cannot be processed in the CTU lab area, including liaising with the 12th floor lab staff 
  • Assist the teams with the collection of  biopsy samples taken in Radiology and theatre and , where appropriate, to process them as per the lab manual. This may involve taking them to another pathology service for processing. 
  • Maintain sufficient stock of reagents for all active trials along with team CTAs.

 

3. Teamwork and Communication 

 

  • Maintains a productive working relationship with staff within PCCTU and with all internal and external parties required for effective central lab sample management.
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills.

  • Takes an active role in unit discussions and will bring forward ideas and opinions. 
  • Undertakes all necessary training to be competent in the role, including:  
  1. GCP PMCC 
  2. Lab safety training Shipping of biological hazard materials 
  3. Liquid Nitrogen use and transport training
  • Attends relevant educational/professional forums.
  •  Participates in regular meeting within the unit e.g. team and unit meetings.
  • Effective and timely communication with key stakeholders.
  • Acts in accordance with hospital policies 
  • Professional development is maintained and promoted 

 

5. General Clinical trial co-ordination 

 

  • Is willing to undertake general trials education to gain addition knowledge of the regulatory aspects of trials
