Join a dynamic and busy team in the Central Specimen Reception (CSR) department of the Pathology services at Peter Mac. CSR is the front face of the Pathology and a cornerstone to the smooth running of the department as a whole. Our commitment to providing a timely and accurate service to our patients is matched by our innovation, flexibility, and ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.  This ongoing, part time position (Friday, 1030-1900) will see you playing a pivotal role in the receipt, triage and registration of biological samples for a wide array of analysis. Your strong attention to detail and prioritisation skills will be utilised as you enter requests for testing into our Laboratory Information System and perform any required preanalytical processing before distributing samples to their appropriate departments. Using your well-developed interpersonal skills, you will effectively liaise with scientific and medical staff from inside and outside the hospital, as well as assisting patients and their families with queries.
 
Applicants should have at least 12 months of experience within a CSR department. The successful applicant may also be required to participate in shifts that include weekends and public holidays. 

Victorian Department of Health has endorsed the initiative to restructure existing public pathology by bringing together laboratories into pathology networks operating under a lead health service. 
Pathology services from the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Royal Women’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital will transition to a single pathology service.  This creates an exciting opportunity to strengthen the scope, scale and reach of pathology services across the Parkville precinct to benefit all Victorians.

Position Summary

The laboratory assistant’s tasks include but are not limited to: 

  • Processing of specimens for analysis 
  • Dispatch of samples to external departments and laboratories 
  • Registration of episodes into Pathology LIS 
  • General laboratory duties as required 
  • Liaising/Communicating with medical, nursing and other allied health staff as appropriate 
  • Loading/unloading samples on laboratory instruments 
  • Calibrating pipettes and minor laboratory instruments 
  • Filing/sorting documentation and samples 
  • Trouble-shooting and following up problems with samples, request slips and rebleeds 
  • Equipment Maintenance 
  • Other miscellaneous lab duties as directed

  • No tertiary qualifications required 
  • Greater than 2 years’ experience in a Pathology laboratory (Specimen Reception area) is essential 
  • Ability to work evening shifts and weekend shifts/Public holidays as required
