Please note Peter Mac does NOT have its own dedicated CSSD department. Peter Mac has a small, specialised Instrument Technician team who perform tasks including scope processing, decontamination and surgical set-ups.

 

Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is home to 8 Operating Theatres, including Endoscopy. The Department covers a variety of specialities including Plastics/Breast, General surgery, Gynaecology/Brachy, Urology, Robotic, Head and Neck, Colorectal, Vascular & Upper GI.
 

Position Overview:

We’re seeking enthusiastic and skilled Instrument Technicians (Grade 1 to 5) to join our Operating Theatre (CSSD). In this role, you'll contribute to safe patient care by ensuring that reusable surgical instruments, endoscopes, and medical consumables are reprocessed to the highest standards in line with AS/NZS 5369.

 

Remuneration as per Health and Allied Services, Managers and Administrative Workers (Victorian Public Sector) (Single Interest Employers) Enterprise Agreement 2025-2027. Up to $30.00 (IN1) - $41.46 (IN5) base salary per hour + applicable casual loading.


Key Responsibilities

 

Decontamination & Processing

  • Perform manual and automated cleaning of surgical instruments and reusable medical devices.
  • Operate Soluscope AERs and Soluscope drying cabinets for high-level disinfection of endoscopes.
  • Follow validated sterilisation practices and comply with infection control guidelines
  • You will also liaise between Peter Mac and the RMH CSSD

 

Theatre/Procedure Room Support

  • Assist with theatre set-ups, delivering and configuring instrument sets/consumables to meet scheduled surgical requirements.
  • Respond efficiently to urgent case requests and ensure timely turnaround of critical items.


Deboxing & Consumable Management

  • Receive and debox surgical consumables, ensuring they meet sterility, expiry, and compliance requirements.
  • Manage and store consumables safely in appropriate CSSD or theatre storage areas.


Endoscopy Reprocessing

  • Perform manual cleaning, leak testing, and transport of endoscopes for reprocessing.
  • Execute full reprocessing cycles including cleaning, disinfection, drying, and storage using Soluscope systems.


Quality Control & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate records via Censitrac or equivalent tracking systems.
  • Complete sterilisation batch documentation, including BI results, wash validations, and cycle parameters
  • Assist in audits, stocktakes, and quality assurance activities.


Teamwork & Professional Development

  • Collaborate with theatre nurses, theatre technicians, and other CSSD staff.
  • Participate in ongoing education, in-services, and professional competency development.
  • Promote safe practice, continuous improvement, and patient-first outcomes.

 

About You (Essential Requirements)

  • Certificate III or IV in Sterilisation Services (or working towards).
  • An understanding of the AS/NZS 5369 standards.
  • Experience using instrument tracking software.
  • High attention to detail, critical problem-solving, and strong communication.

Position Summary

The Instrument Technician position works closely with health professionals within the Operating Suite to support the patients’ surgical care by providing a range of instrumentation and environmental support services including; 

  • Managing the initial decontamination process of all reusable reprocessed items to be sent to MH CSSD for reprocessing. 

  • Management of endoscopes, inclusive of; cleaning, testing, processing and liaising with the O.R. Floor coordinator for maintenance and repair of endoscopes within the perioperative and outpatient environment. 

  • Management of Sterile Set ups for the required operating theatre lists. 

  • Management of consumables and reprocessed sterile items in relation to checking, unpacking and stocking within the perioperative environment. 

  • Ensuring a clean, dust free environment within the CSSD satellite, sterile store, sterile core and Endoscopy clean up areas of the perioperative environment.

1. Collect, scan and rinse reusable reprocessed items for reprocessing by MH and load into CSSD trolleys in accordance with AS/NZS 4187. 

 

  • To be physically able to perform the duties as required, using appropriate methods and techniques. 
  • To maintain an accepted standard of performance to ensure a clean uncluttered environment. 
  • Ensure all reusable items are collected from the operating theatres. 
  • Ensure all reusable items are scanned into censitrac. 
  • Rinse all reusable items removing all gross contaminates and placing them back into their relevant containers. 
  • Place all reusable items and containers into the MH CSSD trolley for transport to MH CSSD. 
  • Document and report any anomalies or items requiring repair. 
  • Ensure all service areas are free from dirt, grime and dust. 
  • Restock as required. 
  • Assist other Instrument Technicians and clinical staff with other activities within the agreed scope. 

 

2. Clean process and maintain flexible endoscopes according to the requirements of the operating lists and GENCA guidelines. 

 

  • Respond in a timely manner to the maintenance and care of the flexible endoscopes in both the operating suite and outpatient’s department. 
  • Respond in timely manner to cleaning and preparation of flexible endoscopes required for the operating lists and outpatient clinics. 
  • Carry out all duties in a manner that fulfils the vision and values of Peter Mac. 
  • Accept responsibility for the standards of work achieved. 
  • Escalate workload concerns and or unfinished work to the supervisor of the team to seek assistance in a timely manner.

3. Management of consumables and reprocessed sterile items in relation to checking, unpacking and stocking 

 

  • To be physically able to perform the duties as required, using appropriate methods and techniques. 
  • Assist with the unloading of reprocessed reusable items and containers from MH CSSD. 
  • Adhere to AS4187 in the storage, stock rotation and handling of reprocessed reusable items and sterile consumables. 
  • Ensure all stock and supply storage areas are stocked to correct levels. 
  • Assist with ordering consumables/supplies as required. 
  • Ensure patient confidentiality at all times. 
  • Provide clear and concise communication with all staff in the process of performing duties. 
  • Provide urgent supply services as requested. 
  • Assist other Instrument Technicians and clinical staff with other activities within the agreed scope.

4. Management of Sterile Set ups for the required operating theatre lists 

 

  • Ensure all required set ups for operating lists are completed in a timely manner 100% of the time. 
  • Assist with maintaining and updating surgeon preference cards. 
  • Ensure sterile cores are restocked at all times. 
  • Assist clinical staff in locating urgent supplies in a timely manner. 
  • Remove and report any out of date, damaged and/or unusual items. 
  • Ensure all service areas are free from dirt, grime and dust, both high and low. 
  • Assist other Instrument Technicians and clinical staff with other activities within the agreed scope.
