Health Assistant in Nursing (HAN) – Medical Oncology Ward 3A

Permanent, Part Time Role

 

24 Hours / Fortnight

07:00 - 13:30 (Thursday and Sunday)

OUR PATIENTS
Our medical oncology team cares for patients who have been diagnosed with lung, head and neck, bone and soft tissue sarcoma, neurological, gynaecological, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, skin and melanoma cancers, paediatric inpatients and those receiving nuclear medicine therapies. The treatment modalities provided to patients include chemotherapy, external beam radiotherapy, nuclear medicine treatments, symptom management, palliative care and adolescent care. (with a range of cancers including sarcoma, melanoma, head and neck, lung, neurological, gynaecological, gastrointestinal and genitourinary)
 
OUR TEAM
Our multidisciplinary medical oncology team has an exceptional culture of learning and support. Together we work to ensure our patients receive the highest quality care and best health outcomes possible. As a HAN within the team, you will have access to a full-time ward based nurse educator known as the Practice Development Nurse. Our HANs work under the delegation and supervision of the Registered Nurses in the team to provide direct and indirect patient support.
 
OUR FACILITIES
The medical oncology ward is a 32-bed unit located on level 3 at Peter Mac. Our patients are cared for in single and double rooms with a patient entertainment system, online meal ordering and access to our communal spaces within and external to the ward.  Peter Mac sits within the Parkville precinct and is easily accessible by public transport, bicycle or car with staff parking available onsite. Peter Mac also boasts great coffee and food at our multiple cafés.

YOU – ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
•    Certificate III in Health Services Assistance or equivalent
•    Well-developed interpersonal skills
•    Good written and verbal communication skills
•    Demonstrated organisational, time management, planning and prioritizing skills
•    Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
•    Patient centered and compassionate approach to care.

Position Summary

The role of the Health Assistant in Nursing (HAN) is to provide support to the nursing team in the delivery of safe and quality patient-centered care.
The HAN is required to always work under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), within their scope of practice. See the HAN Scope of Practice for more detail regarding specific roles and responsibilities.
The HAN will participate in delegated aspects of patient care including but not limited to assistance with personal hygiene, mobility and positioning, nutritional support, and elimination needs.

1.Safe and efficient patient care delivery under direction of Nurse Unit Manager or Registered Nurse or as protocol dictates
  • Commitment to a patient/client centered approach in the provision of health care and services, consistent with the employing organisation’s values, mission and vision. It is expected that you demonstrate the core values of patient centered care in every interaction with patients, carers and colleagues.
  • Ensures all elements of delegated work are completed to a high standard and in accordance with Peter Mac policies, procedures and values
  • Participate in delegated care relating to patients activities ofdaily living, ensuring that the personal needs, dignity, and comfort of patients are maintained
  • Enhance patient recovery by assisting with patient positioning, transfers, ambulation and other delegated care activities
  • Provide constant observation to patients a
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for patients, visitors and staff and report incidents immediately to supervising RN and other members of the health care team
  • Provide assistance with other patient related services (assist with various duties pertaining to the immediate patient area, clean relevant patient equipment and ensure relevant stock levels are maintained on the ward)
  • Collaborate and consult with the Registered nurse and other multidisciplinary team members to achieve desired health outcomes for patients.
  • Attend ward/unit based meetings and education sessions as requested by the NUM/ RN
  • Accept accountability and responsibility for own actions, and ensure that work is within the capability and boundaries of the HAN at all times. Provide a high standard of patient care at all times
  • Comply with all Peter Mac Policies and Procedures and stay up to date with changes
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills utilising the “No Lift” policy, in accordance with the hospital “No Lift” policy
