  • PAIN MEDICINE FELLOW- Cancer, Acute and Chronic Pain
    1 Full time position – Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre Melbourne, 1 Full time position - Peter MacCallum Centre + Royal Melbourne Hospital
  • Fixed term - 6 or 12 month appointment
  • 43 Hours Per Week - plus associated Weekend Rounds

 

As Australia’s leading Cancer Centre, the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre provides high quality treatment and support to cancer patients, their families and carers. Peter Mac is an internationally renowned organisation with its main campus in Melbourne.

A vacancy exists for a 6 or 12 month post as a Pain Medicine Fellow commencing on 2nd February, 2026. Duties will include managing acute, chronic and cancer pain with close liaison between medical and surgical cancer services.

Fellows will work at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre Melbourne site and Royal Melbourne Hospital. They will gain experience in acute and chronic cancer pain, acting within a multidisciplinary pain team.

The Peter MacCallum Cancer training position is a satellite site with the Royal Melbourne Hospital and is a Tier 1 training site with the Faculty of Pain Medicine.
There are opportunities for collaboration and rotations to occur.

Key Relationships

Internal
  • Readiness to take direction and willingness to learn from Supervisor, other members of the team, and other colleagues. 
  • Ability to direct and guide a resident whose responsibilities are shared with other medical oncology units. 
  • Acts as liaison between Pain and Palliative Care Service, Acute Pain Service, Acute and Persistent Pain Service and Interventional Radiology to ensure patients with complex pain needs are managed most effectively. Acts to ensure pain relieving procedures are performed in a timely and effective manner.  
External
  • Effective working relationships with all disciplines involved in patient care whether they are community based or hospital based.

Essential Requirements
  • Medical qualifications registrable by the Medical Board of Victoria. 
  • Registrar level of experience in medicine, oncology, general practice or related disciplines. 
  • Candidates undertaking Pain specialist training and / or Clinical Diploma in Palliative Medicine will be preferred.   
Desirable Requirements  
  • Ability to provide work in a multidisciplinary team setting. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships with medical staff and other disciplines.

1. Provides high quality patient care using an evidence based, cost effective approach. 
  • All referrals are assessed within 24 hours. 
  • Referrals are reviewed daily. 
  • Participates in weekly Outpatient Clinics (2), Rapid Response Tumour stream reviews 
  • Completes all patient related documentation according to the Centre’s needs. 
  • Ensures all complex cases receive appropriate follow up. 
  • Liaises and communicates with the multidisciplinary treating team 
  • Contributes to team meetings and educational activities. 
  • Actively and regularly participates in peer review patient related activities. 
  • Participates in departmental research projects and audits. 
  • Responds to on-call commitments within an appropriate timeframe. 
  • Works effectively with all internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Conducts and assists in family meetings. 
  • Close liaison with specialist members of the palliative care service, (anaesthetists and psycho-oncologists). 
  • Works with allied health professionals to optimize patient care and discharge planning. 
  • Follows hospital policies and procedures. 
  • A team worker that encourages an environment which attracts, develops and retains staff who work together to achieve a shared vision of excellence 
2. Trains residents, medical students and  participates in other educational activities 
  • Participates in internal and external educational programs. 
  • Completes an audit or case report for publication during the term of employment. 
  • Undertakes other organizational or administrative  duties from time to time as requested by the Director and / or Executive Director Medical Services
