The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre at the Victoria Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) is Australia’s only public hospital solely dedicated to cancer and one of an elite group of hospitals worldwide to have its own integrated cancer research program and laboratories. 

The position is for 12 months for people having obtained their FRACS or equivalent and involves working with the Head & Neck Cancer Surgeons in a high volume cancer hospital that specialises in respective head & neck tumour management. The position gives extensive exposure to all Head & Neck Cancers including metastatic and complex skin cancers, thyroid malignancies and involvement in the newly developing TORS program.

Duties will include managing Head & Neck Surgical Oncology Patients with close liaison between the Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Radiation Oncology and the Department of Cancer Anaesthesia & Pain Medicine.

There are extensive research opportunities within the Division of Cancer Surgery as well as research laboratories at our centre. There is also the possibility for private assisting.

The position involves working with a dedicated multidisciplinary team of cancer specialists in a tertiary referral cancer centre. The successful applicant is involved in the diagnosis, work up, surgery and post-operative care of cancers. It also involves the care of non-operative and palliative patients. The fellow is expected to be involved with managing the unit, outpatients, teaching, research and being involved in the on-call roster.

1. Continuum of Care
1.1. Clinical Service

Responsible for the delivery of clinical service as delegated by Unit Head or Clinical Director.  He/She will assist the Unit Head/Clinical Director in the implementation of relevant policies and procedures.  This will enable the Department to be favourably benchmarked with comparable with comparable services within public and private institutions both nationally and internationally.

1.2. Teaching and Education
Ensure staff competence and job satisfaction by providing adequate training programs and encouraging developmental opportunities.  This would involve planning and implementation of undergraduate teaching, postgraduate teaching, continuing medical education, continuing education and support of other nursing, allied health and all other staff.
Conducts performance review as required by the Head of the Department.

Clinical and laboratory research is an important part of the Fellowship Program.  Trainees will be required to develop a satisfactory research plan in association with members of the Unit, participate in Unit research activities and assist other trainees in the unit with their research studies.  The plan will include the hypothesis to be tested, aims of the study, data collection and analysis and it is expected that trainees will present the study for presentation at local and national meetings and complete a manuscript for submission to a specialty referred journal during the fellowship.

The Fellow has responsibility for the services he/she provides in the Unit including inpatient and outpatient services, diagnostic services, teaching, and research and quality improvement activities.

  • Achieve Department activity and quality targets including waiting list targets within the allocated financial budget.
  • Adherence to Hospital policies and procedures to ensure ethical care.
  • Participation in introduction and evaluation of new technologies.
  • Attendance and participation at outpatients sessions, operating sessions and ward work unless otherwise negotiated with the Unit Head.
  • Regular attendance at Departmental, Hospital and Specialty educational meetings and forums.
  • Ongoing involvement in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education including the coordination of weekly Unit meetings.
  • Ongoing supervision and training of junior medical staff including education of registrar and resident in operating theatre.
  • Assist in the development and review of department goals and strategies on an ongoing basis.
  • To co-operate with other specialists in planning the delivery of multi-disciplinary treatments.
  • Attendance and participation in Department and Hospital planning forums.
  • Participation in development of Department Strategic plan.
  • Contribute to the development of Units operational plan.
  • Presentation of papers at specialty meetings.
  • Publication of findings/articles in specialty refereed meetings.
  • Participation in approved departmental initiatives/ research.

2. Leadership and Management
Assist in the supervision, training and counselling of HMOs and other clinical staff allocated to the department including the Unit Surgical Registrar.
Assist in the organisation of Departmental meetings.

Is familiar with the Hospital information system and processes to ensure dissemination of information in a timely and accurate manner.

    • Patient medical records
    • Discharge summaries
    • Hospital/Unit audits
    • ICD 10 coding/IPPP
