YOUR ROLE IN OUR FUTURE
This is a fixed term, full time position at 86 hours per fortnight. As per the position description, the position is a dual six month role shared with St Vincent's. 

Fellow – in Anaesthesia & Perioperative Medicine (with enrolment in the ANZCA Chapter of Perioperative Medicine).

This position expects enrolment in the ANZCA Chapter of Perioperative Medicine program.

During the fellowship year, 6 months will be appointed at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and 6 months at St Vincent’s Hospital. This will leverage the independent and unique strengths in Perioperative Medicine at each of the hospitals.

This requires that the candidate submits a separate application to each of the hospitals, but a joint interview panel will be held.

Position Summary

This position requires enrolment in the Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists Chapter of Perioperative Medicine Course, with six-month (x2) spent in the perioperative medicine program with targeted clinical exposure and education in perioperative medicine at each of Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and St. Vincent’s hospital. 
During the six months spent at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre the fellow will also provide for the day-to-day clinical management of perioperative patients, including preoperative workup, anaesthesia, postoperative care, and pain management under the care and direction of the Directorate of the Director of Anaesthesia, Perioperative and Pain Medicine.
To undertake administrative, teaching, quality improvement and research duties for the Unit under the direction of the Director of Anaesthesia, Perioperative and Pain Medicine to ensure that the Unit is run efficiently.

1. Continuum of Care
1.1. Clinical Service

Responsible for the delivery of clinical service as delegated by Unit Head or Clinical Director. The Fellow will assist the Unit Head/Clinical Director in the implementation of relevant policies and procedures. This will enable the Department to be favourably benchmarked with comparable services within public and private institutions both nationally and internationally.
1.2. Teaching and Education
Ensure staff competence and job satisfaction by providing adequate training programs and encouraging developmental opportunities. This would involve planning and implementation of undergraduate teaching, postgraduate teaching, continuing medical education, continuing education and support of other nursing, allied health and all other staff.
Conducts performance review as required by the Head of the Department.
1.3. Planning
Assist in the development and review of department goals and strategies on an ongoing basis.
To co-operate with other specialists in planning the delivery of multi- disciplinary treatments.
1.4. Research
Clinical and laboratory research is an important part of the Fellowship  Program. Trainees will be required to develop a satisfactory research plan in association with members of the Unit, participate in Unit research activities and assist other trainees in the unit with their research studies. The plan will  include the hypothesis to be tested, aims of the study, data collection and analysis and it is expected that trainees will present the study for presentation at local and national meetings and complete a manuscript for submission to a specialty referred journal during the fellowship.
1. The Fellow has responsibility for anaesthesia services, inpatient and outpatient perioperative services, teaching, and research and quality improvement activities.
1.1. Key performance indicators:
Timely attendance at clinical sessions.
Completion of anaesthetic and perioperative records
Adherence to Hospital policies and procedures to ensure ethical care.
Participation in introduction and evaluation of new technologies.
Contribution to the management of clinical risk, including mandatory reporting.
1.2. Key performance indicators:
Regular attendance at Departmental, Hospital and Specialty educational meetings and forums.
Ongoing involvement in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education including the coordination of weekly Unit meetings.
Ongoing supervision and training of junior medical staff including education of registrar and resident in operating theatre.
1.3. Key performance indicators:
Attendance and participation in Department and Hospital planning forums.
Participation in development of Department Strategic plan.
Contribute to the development of Units operational plan.
1.4. Key performance indicators:
Presentation of papers at specialty meetings.
Publication of findings/articles in specialty refereed meetings.
Participation in approved departmental initiatives/ research.

2. Leadership and Management
Assist in the supervision, training and counselling of unaccredited and accredited registrars and other clinical staff allocated to the department.
Assist in the organisation of Departmental meetings.

  • Contribute to effective and efficient management of the business of the Unit.
