Enrolled Nurse – Vascular Access Specialist Team (VAST)

The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Enrolled Nurse with recent acute hospital experience to join our Vascular Access Specialist Team (VAST). This is an exciting opportunity to further develop your expertise in vascular access within a world-leading oncology environment. Position is part time, 2 days per week, and days may be fixed during the week.  

 

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Assist the VAST team with vascular access device (VAD) insertion, including preparation, procedural support, and post-procedure care. 
  • Provide clinical assessment, monitoring, and management of patients undergoing central line insertion. 
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver best-practice vascular access care for oncology patients. 
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, clinical excellence, and innovation within the VAST, supporting high-quality vascular access services. 

 

About You: 

  • Recent clinical experience in acute care, with demonstrated skills or interest in vascular access—preferably within an oncology setting. 
  • Competence in cannulation and central venous access devices, or a willingness to develop these skills through structured training. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication abilities, with a capacity for patient education and effective engagement with clinical stakeholders. 
  • Passionate about improving patient outcomes through safe, evidence-based vascular access practices. 
  • A collaborative and proactive team player committed to excellence in patient care.

Position Summary

The Enrolled Nurse Level 2 works under the direct or indirect supervision of the registered nurse (RN) and is responsible for the delivery of expert clinical care in his/her specific area. The Enrolled Nurse Level 2 will be responsible for ensuring his/her own professional development and maintain clinical skills and knowledge and for supporting and assisting his/her colleagues. At all times, the EN retains responsibility for his/her actions and remains accountable in providing delegated nursing care.

The EN will support the VAST by providing assessment and support of the patient undergoing central vascular access device (CVAD) insertion with the VAST CNC. The role will also support management of patients with vascular devices insitu including PIVC and CVADs as a member of the VAST.

Essential Requirements

  • Current registration with AHPRA
  • Sound clinical knowledge and demonstrated expertise with a minimum of 12 months experience in Acute Care
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and their relatives, ensuring accurate and seamless information is conveyed to the clinical team and documented
  • NMBA approved qualification in administration of medicines with a scope of up to five routes
  • Competence in cannulation and central venous access devices (or willing to work towards)
  • Demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning and continuing professional development
  • Willingness to learn care of the oncology patient

Desirable Requirements

  • Procedural nursing or surgical nursing experience
  • CVAD and PIVC competent
