About the team
The ambulatory/inpatient nursing division at Peter Mac provides specialised, patient-centred care to individuals receiving cancer treatment. The team plays a critical role in delivering high-quality, compassionate support across a range of services, including day therapy, clinics and treatment planning.
About the role
As the Deputy Director of Nursing, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the Chief Nursing Officer / Executive Director of Nursing and Allied Health in the strategic and operational leadership of our nursing services. You will contribute to the delivery of high-quality patient care, lead on key improvement initiatives, and ensure compliance with all relevant clinical and regulatory standards.
Key responsibilities will see you:
- Provide visible clinical leadership, promoting best practice and continuous improvement
- Support workforce planning, recruitment, and staff development
- Assist in the development and implementation of nursing strategy and policy
- Monitor and enhance the quality of patient care, ensuring a culture of safety and accountability
- Collaborate effectively with the operations and medical directors, executive leadership, and external stakeholders
- Lead on audit, risk management, and governance activities related to nursing practice
About you

You’ll bring with you:
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA
- Post grad qualifications in Oncology Nursing or equivalent, and holding or working towards a Master of Nursing or equivalent
- Recent experience in a nursing leadership role, ADON, NUM etc
- Experience in quality improvement projects and evidence-based practice initiatives
- Active participation in nursing professional organisations, ACN, ISNCC, CNSA etc

Position Summary
The Deputy Director Nursing Ambulatory will lead the strategic planning, identification, development, and implementation of Inpatients or Ambulatory models of nursing at Peter Mac. The position is required to provide professional leadership of the Inpatients or Ambulatory nursing profession ensuring recruitment and retention strategies are in place to attract and retain the best nurses. The DDON is an integral member of the triumvirate model where three leads provide Senior Nursing , Operational and Medical leadership. The role will support the Nursing Workforce Unit and Nursing Education teams in and embedding graduate and newly appointed nurses across all areas and ensure competency and provide strategic nursing leadership to consistently deliver a high quality, evidence-based and cost-effective nursing service.
This role is required to work collaboratively with the Nursing Workforce Unit and Nursing Education to provide governance to nursing actions ensuring access to education, training and supervision. The DDON will be required to provide expert professional leadership and guidance on managing specific outcomes including medication safety, Comprehensive care, clinical documentation including digital health records management, management of physical health and scope of practice, clinical supervision and other portfolios as required.

1.Leadership
Collaboratively develop and support the operational and strategic vision for Inpatients or Ambulatory nursing.
Provide professional leadership for all nursing at Peter Mac.
Develop and lead nursing leadership training in collaboration with Organisational Development, People and Culture and relevant internal and external organisations.
Work collaboratively with the Nursing Workforce Unit to develop recruitment and retention strategies for advanced practice and specialist nursing roles.
Work collaboratively with Nursing Education to ensure adequate pathways and education programs are available for specialist nursing from entry to practice to post graduate nurses.
Be a member of the professional network of the Chief Nursing Officer and is expected to contribute corporately and organisationally.
Develop and maintain positive relationships with key external bodies including the Department of Health, Safer Care Victoria, the McGrath Foundation and Cancer Australia
Take an active lead in health service, local and national projects to both promote and develop nursing and Peter Mac.
Ensures all staff across department adhere to the Nurses Code of Ethics and function within legal requirements of their scope of nursing practice
Foster strong working partnerships with tertiary and vocational bodies involved in nurse education and research.
Maintain membership and actively participate in relevant interest groups/nursing committees, internally, externally including the Cancer Nurses Society of Australia (CNSA) and the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care (ISNCC).

Contribute to the development of professional practice within Peter Mac, Including the promotion of quality improvement, evidence – based practice and research.
2.Clinical Practice
Be recognized as a resource and role model for Clinical Services throughout the organization.
Maintain current knowledge of trends in cancer nursing practice.
Ensure the delivery of high standard of evidence-based nursing care to patients. Establish and maintain effective communication with other health professional and support staff, patients’ families, the community and external care providers.
Collaborate with other health professionals to ensure the patient’s safe and effective transition across the care continuum and facilitate access and referrals to appropriate health resources and services.
Support the ongoing development of the clinical services model and provide support and information to nurses in the graduate nurse program allocated to the clinical service.
Actively engages in the preceptorship program, ensuring succession planning for the role.
Contribute to the development of local, national, and international evidence-based care guidelines, policies and procedures and patient resources.
Support and promote excellence and autonomy in clinical practice and patient care.
Ensure that Clinical Service related patient information and education is current and evidence based.

Establishes and enables a culture of performance improvement and evaluation and develops and evaluates new initiatives to mitigate risk ensuring quality of nursing care and excellent patient outcomes.
Leads and participates in the implementation of evidence-based care.
Collaborates with the Academic Nursing Unit / Office of Cancer Education to generate new nursing knowledge to contribute to a research-based clinical practice.
Assists with the submission of proposals for grants/special projects funding.
Participate in the Executive Quality and Safety Committee
Work collaboratively with the Health Services Research and Nursing Research teams
5.People and Workforce
Ensure the appropriate workforce / roles meet the needs of the services.
Ensures a career pathway is embedded to support nurses in Inpatients and Ambulatory nursing roles.
Remain aware and informed regarding current and predicted nursing workforce issues and formulate proactive strategies to address recruitment and retention needs.
Develop and lead new models of care in Inpatients and Ambulatory nursing including the diversification of roles and responsibilities of nurses and support roles.
