YOUR ROLE IN OUR FUTURE
 
The successful applicant will be expected to work within a mulit-disciplinary team of dental professionals to provide excellent oral health care for Peter Mac patients.

The role involves provision of oral and dental examinations, appropriate investigations, dental hygiene and periodontal treatment, post-cancer treatment reviews, and support for other clinicians in provision of dental care. The Dental Oncology department works closely with all Peter Mac departments, clinicians, and patient support networks. Excellent communication skills and capacity to work collaboratively are essential requirements. Current radiation license and knowledge and training in taking of CBCT radiographs is desirable. A knowledge of research processes would be helpful.

 

The role is for a 12-month fixed term period, 24 hours per week, reporting to the head of Dental Oncology.

Essential Requirements
  • Membership of the Dental Hygienists’ Association of Australia and/or The Australian Dental and Oral Health Therapists’ Association
  • Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as either an Oral Health Therapist or a Dental Hygienist and Dental Therapist
  • Current Radiation Licence (Victoria) and willingness to undergo training in the use of Cone Beam CT
  • Previous experience in a major teaching hospital or acute care facility
  • Proven ability to build effective relationships in a multidisciplinary setting
  • Flexible and patient-focused approach to clinical workload
  • High level systems and computer skills 
Desirable Requirements
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary oncology setting · 
  • Interest and/or experience in clinical research
  • Experience in quality improvement and service development initiatives
  • Experience taking cone-beam CT scans.

1. Clinical Care
  • Comprehensive oral examination
  • Oral health education/Scale and clean/root debridement and prophylaxis
  • Post treatment reviews following radiation/chemotherapy/stem cell therapy
  • Alginate impressions for radiation mouthguards/fluoride trays/dentures/splints.
  • Socket checks
    • Removal of sutures and irrigation of extraction sockets, may require removal of bony sequestrums 
  • Providing local anaesthetic for periodontal procedures or prior to extraction
  • Topical application of desensitising agents and recommendation of specific oral hygiene products/mouthrinses
  • Taking intra-oral radiographs, analysis and interpretation of radiographs
  • Emergency examinations for inpatients
  • Working as a team in collaboration with various dental professionals/specialists within the dental oncology team
  • Effective communication strategies to manage patient complaints, or escalates to manager as required
  • Managing clinical photography and uploading images to EMR 

2. Engagement with medical, nursing, allied and administrative staff

  • Liaising with medical and nursing staff to coordinate clinical care/ timing of procedures, and the need for extra medical precautions (antibiotic cover/platelets transfusions etc)
  • Organization of medical precautions for dental procedures as required
  • Organizing referrals to allied health to provide holistic treatment and optimize care for patients

  • Coordinating appointments with other clinical streams
  • Addressing email correspondence from medical staff/nursing/allied health and patients
  • Logging imaging requests and transferring tru-pan images for CBCT
  • Weekly calibration of CBCT machine and liaising with IT support and external dental companies for technical support
  • Booking/rescheduling/cancelling patient appointments as required
  • Answering phone calls as required 
4. Professional development
  • Undertaking various continuing professional development courses to stay current with gold standard treatments
  • Meetings with external consultants from dental/oral health product companies to stay current with new available products for patients to optimize patient care 

5. Health Promotion and research

  • Construction of oral health education brochures for patients in relation to treatment induced side effects
  • Provide presentations at the University of Melbourne to oral health students to promote dental oncology and role of oral health therapist in this field
  • Co-leading research projects within the department
