What You Will Be Doing

There is an opportunity in the Social Work, Music Therapy, & Art Therapy team at Peter Mac to welcome a Grade 4 Oncology Social Work Clinical Lead. As the Grade 4 Clinical Lead, you will provide clinical leadership to the social work team at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, support the Manager of Social Work & Music Therapy, and work with key internal and external stakeholders to deliver excellence in clinical cancer care, education and research specific to the oncology social work field. This position will operate with a high degree of autonomy with additional clinical leadership, educational and administrative responsibilities.   

 

What You Will Need

 

Required

  • A Qualifying Masters in Social Work. Post graduate studies are highly regarded and may be eligible for a higher education allowance.
  • Eligibility for Australian Association of Social Work (AASW) membership

  • Exceptionally strong theoretical knowledge and specialist clinical expertise acquired over at least 10 years of relevant experience. 
  • Extensive experience in the area of cancer care, with recognition as a leader in this field, with clinically relevant postgraduate qualifications (or working towards).
  • Demonstrated ability to provide expert clinical service, mentoring, and professional supervision of other employees. 
  • A capacity to initiate, engage and provide leadership in matters relating to quality improvement, evaluation, and service re-design, based on evidence-based practice. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills. 
  • High level of negotiation, problem solving and analytical skills.  
  • High level of proactive planning and organisational skills.  
  • Excellent supervisory and teaching skills  
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and as part of a team. 
  • Innovative, adaptive, resourceful and able to drive change. 
     

Desired

  • Current professional affiliations with universities, research organisations or external service organisations 
  • Experience in the design and conduct of clinical research, including success in obtaining research funding and driving the research capability of the service. 
  • Demonstrated ability to attract and supervise research students. 
  • Demonstrated ability with clinical research, including publication in relevant scientific journals and presentations at conferences.

Position Summary

The Grade 4 clinician is a nationally recognised leader in the area of clinical cancer care and will provide clinical leadership to the social work team at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.  They will support the Head of Social Work & Music Therapy and work with key stakeholders across Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre to deliver excellence in patient cancer care, education and research. A grade 4 clinician will operate with a high degree of autonomy with additional clinical leadership, managerial, educational and administrative responsibilities.

  • Provide advanced clinical leadership to the social work team, including supervision of staff, and ensures competency of staff.

  • Provide expert secondary consultation to staff at all levels within Peter Mac and to other stakeholders (internal/external) as required

  • Provides advanced clinical expertise in the specialty area of cancer care, including direct provision of patient care (approximately 30-50% of time)
  • Demonstrates problem solving, risk management skills and capacity to develop innovative solutions to sensitive and complex clinical challenges
  • Supports the clinical governance framework and associated policies and procedures that relate to clinical service provision
  • Supports quality improvement planning and implements initiatives in line with the service and organizational requirements, Accreditation and consistent with world’s best practice, and are based on the latest available evidence
  • Supports the supervision framework and ongoing  evaluation of clinical practice of practitioners across the clinical service 

 

3. Develop and encourage strategic relationships

 

  • Builds and maintains effective relationships with key (internal and external)
  • Effective collaboration with partners across government, health, community and the not for profit sector  
  • Participates in public relations opportunities and speaking engagements as a representative of Social Work and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre

In conjunction with the Head of Department/Senior team:

  • Develops and implements research projects relevant to the area of clinical expertise;
  • Presents research findings in peer-reviewed scientific publications and at relevant conferences;
  • Actively seeks funding and grant opportunities for research and projects; 
  • Builds relationships with relevant academic partners in order to develop and increase research profile;
  • Assess research proposals for funding, ethics and publication, as appropriate
