The Molecular Pathology Laboratory in the Department of Pathology is looking for an experienced Clinical Educator to support our molecular diagnostic services. The permanent full-time position presents an exciting opportunity to contribute to this rapidly growing field.Suitable candidates must be highly motivated, self-driven, patient-focused, and possess a relevant science degree with demonstrated experience in developing and delivering training and competency programs. Experience working in an accredited Diagnostic Molecular Pathology / Genetics laboratory, and subject matter expertise in genomics would be an advantage.

Victorian Department of Health has endorsed the initiative to restructure existing public pathology by bringing together laboratories into pathology networks operating under a lead health service. 
Pathology services from the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Royal Women’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital will transition to a single pathology service.  This creates an exciting opportunity to strengthen the scope, scale and reach of pathology services across the Parkville precinct to benefit all Victorians.
This role will transition to the new lead health service for pathology services once determined.

Position Summary

To support the cancer molecular pathology education program within Pathology Department by developing training materials that meets clinical and scientific needs to enable scientists, technicians, pathologists and specialists in training to gain sufficient knowledge and practical experience commensurate with their roles and responsibilities in a variety of cancer pathology contexts. Tasks include (but are not limited to):

- Develop curricula for staff training programs

- Conduct opportunity analyses to identify existing educational materials that may be suitable or adaptable.

- Apply contemporary learning design methodology and practices to develop high-quality, progressive educational content and activities.

- Develop Training and Competency frameworks

- Work with Peter Mac Pathology and other stakeholders to ensure consistency with related genomic education projects and delivery of resources to time, budget and stakeholder (internal and external) satisfaction.

- Lead training and assessment programs within laboratory.

NOTE: The hours of this position are subject to change in line with our commitment to providing exceptional customer service.

This role will contribute to the University of Melbourne's partnership with international genomics company Illumina by collaborating with The Advanced Genomics Collaboration by jointly fostering the development of world-leading genomics research and innovation activities and to accelerate the translation of these innovation through to adoption in the healthcare system.

Essential Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science or an equivalent qualification in education, genetics and/or medical education, educational technologies, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Strong interest in training and education in medical laboratory science.
  • Ability to assimilate, critically assess, evaluate and condense relevant literature.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage priorities, and deliver outcomes in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate cooperatively in a team including scientists, pathologists, genetic counsellors, clinical staff and researchers.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication.
  • Competent in use of computer/laboratory and learning design software.

Desirable Requirements

  • MSc, PhD or equivalent specializing in cancer biology or molecular genetic testing.
  • Experience as a learning or instructional designer.
  • Experience in cancer research and/or cell biology.
  • Experience in diagnostic genomics (clinical or laboratory) particularly (but not limited to) high-throughput genetics, somatic and germline genetics and variant curation.
  • Experience in delivering professional development / training materials including new approaches for learning, particularly in online learning environments.
  • Demonstrated ability in creating and managing courses using Learning Management Systems.
  • Well-developed project management, production and documentation skills.
  • Familiarity with bodies involved in medical education and training, health-related organisations, such as medical colleges.
  • Familiar with laboratory quality systems.
  • Experience in clinical bioinformatics.
  • An interest in medical research, public health and/or genomic medicine, preferably demonstrated through choice of subjects, thesis topics and/or work experience.

  • Work with stakeholders to identify learning objectives and curricula that align with outcomes to develop and facilitate a series of tailored genomic education initiatives delivering online and face-to-face learning.
  • Conduct opportunity analyses to identify existing educational materials that may be suitable or adaptable.
  • Apply contemporary learning design methodology and practices to develop high quality, progressive educational content and activities.
  • Closely interact with subject matter experts, external consultants and the laboratory to develop educational content.
  • Deliver resources on time, to budget and stakeholder (internal and external) satisfaction.

2. Promote a workplace culture of professional development that encourages change, learning, innovation and a team-based approach.

  • Liaising with a variety of stakeholders such as academics, medical professionals and administrators to create and promote content to educate a diverse audience will require.
  • Build engagement and foster relationships to ensure key objectives are met.
  • Demonstrates a conduct focused on the trainee meeting the training objectives.

3. Training in all aspects of molecular pathology to meet the requirements of clinical cancer testing & reporting.

  • Trainees become competent in cancer testing comensurate with their role.
  • Trainees are competent in recognizing and interpreting clinically significant results including concise and informative explanations and recommendations based on appropriate medical literature.
  • Trainee curators are competent in communicating and reporting clinically significant results in a professional manner to meet the needs of clinicians and patients.
  • Trainees are aware of the patient confidentiality and ethical issues of genomic testing.

4. Ongoing evaluation and update of training program.

  • Maintains familiarity with new clinical cancer testing methodologies in clinical cancer genomics within the laboratory and where appropriate updates training program accordingly.
  • Use a program logic approach and mixed methods to evaluate and continuously improve the training program.

5. Works as part of a team.

  • Communicates and cooperates with co-workers to ensure training is completed within appropriate timeframes.
