Full Time Fixed Term Role

The Department of Pathology at Peter Mac provides molecular testing services to support cancer diagnosis and treatment decisions for Peter Mac patients, and cancer patients Australia-wide. We maintain a complex genomic sequencing platform and have a dedicated Clinical Bioinformatics team to develop, release and maintain our bioinformatic pipelines. A Bachelor of Science or equivalent qualification in Bioinformatics or Computer Science, proficiency in Python programming and LINUX Shell scripting, previous working experience with genomic data analysis, and ideally experience working with cloud computing, containers and workflows would be preferred.We are seeking a Clinical Bioinformatician to join our Molecular Pathology Laboratory in the Department of Pathology. You will work within the Clinical Bioinformatics team to provide best-practice development, validation, and support of our clinical next generation sequencing bioinformatic pipelines.

 

ABOUT THE ROLE

  •  2 year fixed term ending June 2027
  • Full Time 80 hours per fortnight + ADO 
  • Parkville location with hybrid working and multiple public transport options available 
  • Salary range between $74,448.4 -$82,305.6 depending on experience + salary packaging + super + 4 weeks annual leave

Victorian Department of Health has endorsed the initiative to restructure existing public pathology by bringing together laboratories into pathology networks operating under a lead health service. 
Pathology services from the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Royal Women’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital will transition to a single pathology service.  This creates an exciting opportunity to strengthen the scope, scale and reach of pathology services across the Parkville precinct to benefit all Victorians.
This role will transition to the new lead health service for pathology services once determined.

Position Summary

The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre offers cutting edge cancer genomics screening and analysis for actionable clinical interpretation. Our clinically targeted next generation sequencing panels and bioinformatics pipelines require embedded clinical bioinformatics expertise within the Pathology Department.

This position will support the Molecular Pathology Laboratory to provide the highest quality of molecular services to the patients of Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and its external clients.

Key duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Assisting with the bioinformatics requirements for the department’s R&D projects through the implementation and maintenance of informatics solutions for the analysis of various next-generation sequencing data.

Essential Requirements:

  • BSc or equivalent in Bioinformatics or Computer Science
  • Prior full-time work experience as Bioinformatician 
  • Excellent Python programming skills
  • Solid experience with LINUX and Shell scripting
  • Experience with NGS data analysis
  • Excellent verbal communication, organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team
     

Desirable Requirements:

  • MSc or equivalent in Bioinformatics or Computer Science
  • Prior full-time work experience as Bioinformatician in a clinical setting
  • Experience working with cloud computing, containers and workflows
  • An interest in clinical applications of NGS in cancer
  • Familiarity with cancer genetics, cancer research, cell biology, or personalised medicine
