About the team

Cancer Imaging at Peter Mac delivers high‑quality, patient‑focused diagnostic and therapeutic imaging services that support world‑class cancer care, research and education. The department operates across multiple modalities and campuses and plays a critical role in supporting clinical decision‑making, treatment planning and research initiatives. The Chief Medical Imaging Technologist is a key member of the Cancer Imaging Leadership Team, working closely with the Director of Cancer Imaging and Operations Director – Cancer Imaging.

 

About the role

The Chief Medical Imaging Technologist (CMIT) is responsible for the leadership and management of Medical Imaging Technologists across the Cancer Imaging service. The role supports the Director of Cancer Imaging to maximise the efficiency, quality and safety of imaging services, ensure services are customer‑focused and delivered in a timely manner, and contribute to strategic service planning, innovation and continuous improvement.
A regular day will see you:
  • Provide leadership and management to the Medical Imaging Technologist team, role‑modelling Peter Mac values and fostering a high‑performing, collaborative culture.
  • Lead service planning, development and evaluation to ensure high‑quality, accessible imaging services that meet patient and referrer needs and achieve budget objectives.
  • Manage people, financial and equipment resources, including workforce planning, budgeting, procurement, credentialing and performance management.
  • Drive quality improvement, safety, education and research initiatives in line with organisational priorities and national standards.

 

About you

You are an experienced and values‑driven imaging leader who thrives in a complex healthcare environment. You bring strong strategic thinking, excellent communication skills and a collaborative leadership style, with a commitment to quality, safety, innovation and compassionate care.
You’ll bring with you:
  • A recognised tertiary qualification in Medical Imaging Technology and current AHPRA registration.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a comprehensive medical imaging service in a complex hospital setting, including strategic service planning, development and performance reporting.
  • Advanced knowledge of medical imaging modalities, emerging technologies, and the development and implementation of relevant policies and standards.
  • Proven leadership and management capability across financial and human resources, with experience building effective, high‑performing teams.
  • Highly developed communication, consultation and stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to influence and negotiate in complex environments.
  • A strong commitment to continuous quality improvement, education, research and customer‑focused service delivery.
Postgraduate qualifications in management or a related field, active engagement with professional bodies, and an understanding of Peter Mac’s strategic direction are desirable.

Position Summary

The Chief Medical Imaging Technologist (CMIT) is responsible for managing the Medical Imaging Technologists.

The CMIT role also provides support to the Director of Cancer Imaging, with the aim of maximising the efficiency, quality and safety of the services provided by the staff, and to ensure services are customer focused, and provided in a timely manner.

The CMIT role is part of the Cancer Imaging Leadership Team.

Essential Requirements 
  • Recognised tertiary qualification in Medical Imaging Technology 
  • Current AHPRA registration 
  • Demonstrated experience in managing a comprehensive medical imaging service in a complex hospital setting, including well-developed skills in strategic service planning and development, and reporting service outputs and outcomes. 
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of medical imaging modalities and techniques emerging technology, and experience in developing, implementing and evaluating policies and standards pertinent to medical imaging. 
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills in managing financial and human resources and fostering effective teamwork to achieve departmental/service and hospital service targets and goals. 
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, consult, negotiate and influence within an environment of complex team structures, and develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop high-level technical reports, and busyness cases.

Responsible for the delivery of high quality and accessible diagnostic and therapeutic medical imaging services that meet the needs of referrers and patients and achieves budget objectives

Formulates, develops and evaluates policy with reference to MIT service delivery
Together with Clinical Leadership Team, ensures that service design meets demand
Brings innovative ideas to service planning and redesign
Develops and monitors a suite of MIT operational and business performance measures to evaluate the performance of the department
Ensures NATA Accreditation standards of practice are achieved for all aspects of service delivery under the control of MITs

3.Manage people, financial and equipment resources and day-to-day operational matters

Develops and manages annual budget according to organisational guidelines
Implements relevant HPV tender to meet clinical needs
Demonstrates understanding of department finances and identifies, consults and manages emerging issues in a timely way
