About the team
The Chief Health Information Manager is the Head of the Health Information Service (HIS), with overall responsibility for all activities undertaken by all HIS teams including the Coding, Patient Information, and Data & Referrals teams.
About the role
The Chief Health Information Manager is responsible for, but not limited to the following:
- Provides leadership and advice to HIS Line Managers and the broader staff teams including the Clinical Coding Service, the Scanning team and the Registrations & Referrals team
- Either personally represents, or allocates suitable personnel to represent HIS, on both internal, precinct, and external committees and special interest groups
- Leads and delivers the organisational change required to support the introduction of new technologies that support patient information capture, analysis and use.
About you
You will have at least 5-years of senior management experience in a Health Information Services role with experience in managing and communicating successfully with large and diverse teams.
- Tertiary qualification in Health Information Management
- Strong knowledge of clinical coding and casemix / activity-based funding concepts
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong computer literacy
- Commitment to continuous quality improvement, change management, education, training and research

Position Summary

The Chief HIM

- Ensures HIS finances and budget meet health service expectations
- Ensures quality improvement activities are embedded in daily activities by all teams
- Provides expert advice to the health service and precinct, on patient information privacy related matters
- Ensures policies and procedures relevant to the management of patient information, and all HIS responsibilities, are reviewed and kept up to date
- Works with HIS at other Parkville precinct hospitals on initiatives to reduce duplication and leverage economies of scale.

- Leads and implements process improvement and organisation change at a departmental level Regular attendance at committees or other meetings as nominated
- Contributes to service planning on a departmental health service, and precinct wide basis, as required
- Maintains organisational policies, procedures and guidelines that are the responsibility of HIS
- Ensures HIS protocols and systems are developed or introduced in line with Peter Mac’s strategic plan
- Ensures HIS practices and systems are developed or introduced in line with the Parkville precinct health services requirements
- Ensures the health service’s interests in health information management are represented at external forums

- Coordinates the department’s annual budget formulation in line with advice from the HIS Finance Business Partner
- Monitors budget performance and addresses variances against budget
- Develops Business Cases for the department as required and as per Peter Mac guidelines

- Ensure annual performance development conversations are completed by all direct reports
- Provides opportunity for professional development and education for all staff within budgetary constraints
- Manages Health, Safety and Wellbeing requirements, as evidenced by minimal events.
