Diversity and Inclusion

Celebrating difference

At Peter Mac, we embrace and celebrate the differences inherent in our people, within our diverse and multicultural society. We know from Census data that Victoria is home to one of the most culturally diverse populations in the world.  These cultural differences define our identity, sense of belonging and how we interact.

Gender Equity

At Peter Mac we aspire to lead the health and medical research community in achieving gender equity, ensuring women have the same leadership opportunities at all levels of our organisation.

We are committed to creating an environment where there are no real or perceived barriers for women in attaining leadership positions and where remuneration is fair and equal.

Peter Mac is working to meet the obligations set out in the Gender Equality Act 2020, including the development of a Gender Equality Action Plan, a Workplace Gender Audit and Gender Impact Assessments.

First Nations Peoples

As a premier cancer treatment hospital and research institution, it is Peter Mac’s responsibility to provide culturally appropriate, safe and responsive health care and to lead the way to delivering better health outcomes for First Nations Peoples.

The Peter Mac Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) focuses on developing and strengthening relationships with First Nations Peoples, engaging staff and stakeholders in reconciliation, and developing innovative strategies to empower Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

Peter Mac is committed to increasing employment opportunities for First Nations Peoples and to ensuring that all Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander staff have a voice across the organisation, particularly through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee.

LGBTQI+

Peter Mac is a strong LGBTIQ+ ally and fully supports the development and improvement of a respectfully inclusive environment for staff and patients at Peter Mac. The Peter Mac Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan ensures key deliverables are met and campaigns for an environment that is inclusive and culturally safe.

As allies, our campaign for support has successfully seen Peter Mac attend its first Midsumma Pride March in 2021 and launch a position statement on intersectionality: ‘Using an intersectionality lens to underpin, influence and improve our approach to diversity and inclusion in healthcare’.

Peter Mac celebrates key days such as the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) and provides visual cues, such as the installation of rainbow flags within Peter Mac, to provide a welcoming environment for LGBTIQ+ patients, staff and community members.

Accessibility

At Peter Mac we strive for equal access for all Victorians and the strategies for achieving this change for staff and patients are outlined in our Disability Action Plan.

Outcome area 1: Reducing barriers to persons with a disability accessing goods, services and facilities at Peter Mac.

Outcome area 2: Reducing barriers to persons with a disability obtaining and maintaining employment, including volunteers, at Peter Mac.

Outcome area 3: Promoting inclusion and participation in the Peter Mac community of persons with a disability.

Outcome area 4: Achieving tangible changes in attitudes and practices at Peter Mac which discriminate against persons with a disability.

We have celebrated International Day of People with Disability by campaigning and offering staff online training to support their understanding of Disability and the appropriate language and behaviours to consider and adopt when interacting with people with a disability.
